Great insight here, Nin. I agree with you, the signing away of the Shanshu was significant for Angel because it cut his connection to TPTB. By signing it away, he freed himself from what he thought to be false hope that his redemption would be "given" to him, and allowed him to decide his own path, without that elusive carrot in front of him.
I'm still unsure about whether Connor represents his Shanshu. In a lot of ways it fits, because children are our way of continuing on, even after we die. Hmmm. now I'm having a thought...wait, now I'm having another. **head explodes**
