I don't remember what the time line on Xander was when he got separated in two. Several days, maybe more. There may have been more going on than we saw.

Giles and the slayer handbook. He would have known of course, but Buffy was so outside the realm of most slayers, it didn't apply. He knew that and maybe was his first invisible step in the process of realizing this reality about Buffy. That would have been very early in their relationship that he would have discarded the handbook. He never bothered telling her.
