To be or not to be

Not many people would argue that Hamlet made the right decisions all the time, some would argue that he didn't make the right decisions any of the time I guess but having made his decision to 'be', and in this instance this is defined by his decision to avenge the death of his father he's really rather good at what he does. Polonius wouldn't agree of course but it is debateable even that Hamlet didn't kill Polonius deliberately. His motive could easily be the simple reason that he does not concur that 'madness in great one's must not go unwatched' or even presumably in that interpretation that it is madness.

For my part I'd say that Hamlet was barking mad because he could have dibed his time and become king in his turn. He could have done all the 'being' he wanted then. It would have made for a dull play though and a dull, if rather longer, life.

There's a debate in the UK at the moment about the 'nanny state' where kids are forbidden to eg play 'Conkers' at school, let alone - heaven forfend - British Bulldog (that's like American Football played on a tarmac surface without the pads, or a scoring system, or a ball, or...come to think of it the purpose is just to charge up and down and try not to get maimed). I don't know if you have conkers in the states but in case not what you do is take horse chestnut seeds, bore a hole through them, put them on a shoelace or a bit of string and take turns with a friend beating the c**p out of each others conker till one of them falls apart. The objection is that broken conker pieces can fly up and cause eye injuries. Whilst this is true, where do you draw the line between being alive each day and just being unwrapped from your styro-foam protective coccoon for supervised activities (lengthy rant deleted, no, REALLY). All sorts of activities which kids used to get a chance at only as a result of school are being ruled out for safety (ie insurance) reasons. So we're returning to a point where if you can afford to participate in a supervised (1 on 1 or close to it) training session that's OK but if you can't you'll just have to go play chicken on the railway tracks 'cos you won't get any adrenaline into your system any other way.
