I think she deserves to be suspended for a few days pending an investigation.

What gets me about this storyline is the fact we only have a hint of what Ana's background is. I would have said military or maybe, maybe police. Thing is we just don't know yet. They went through a lot to cover the basics in the 48 days and I know we will have to wait to get a complete picture.

The shot, in an interview one of the writers says she is the one who shot Shannon but on the boards there has been a question about an island 'grassy knowl' but Damon Lindelof had something else to say to TV Guide:

http://www.tvguide.com/news/askausiello

***Are you concerned that Ana-Lucia is beyond redemption? I can't tell you how many e-mails I got from AA readers asking, "When is that bitch going to die?!" Actually, I can tell you: 124.

Carlton: At the beginning of last season, people didn't like Josh Holloway's character either. And by the end of the season, he was one of the most-liked characters on the show. It'll be really interesting to see, as we tell more about Ana-Lucia, whether that changes the audience's perception of her. We think it will.

Damon: In the same moment that we decided Shannon would die, [we also decided that] Ana-Lucia would be responsible for that death. It would be the first time one castaway was responsible for killing another, and it would give so much inherent conflict and trauma [heading to] the merge. We're walking a very tenuous tightrope with her, but we feel that over the course of the next two episodes the audience will hopefully get a better understanding for that character and what she's been through.***

Ana did make a comment that seems out of line but at the beginning of the episode she made a promise to that little girl that she would get her home, so to her that was a commitment that she took very seriously. Just because they aren't related by blood hasn't seemed to lessen the impact to Ana of the kidnapping of the child.

If you saw the pre-view for the next episode it will be clear where Kate is.
