Subject: Black Horse spoilers for Lost 2.9 "What Kate Did"

Sawyer: "Love her....I love her."

Tonight we got to learn what it is Kate did. The unknown is always more interesting than the reality of why someone ends up where they are. Kate and Sawyer have much in common, both killing or trying to kill the person who they feel ruined their lives, only to find the worst damage may be from their own actions. We also get to see just how complex the relationship between Jack/Kate/and Sawyer is and will be. Jack is the perfection that Kate will never feel she is good enough for, and Sawyer resembles what she feels she deserves, doesn't help when he speaks for a dead man.

It started when Kate saw a black horse while gathering food for Sawyer. That takes her back to the front stairs of her former home, flicking a lighter. A truck pulls up and a drunken man tumbles out. Kate helps the man (her real father) into the bedroom when he says:

"What is that smell?"

He then gets busy talking to Kate who is helping him to bed:

"You're beautiful...Aren't you going to take my pants off first?"

Kate leaves and climbs onto a motorcycle, seconds later the house explodes. Kate finds her mother, a waitress who is in love with a creep, and is either blind or can't bring herself to get rid of a more conventional way, like divorce.

Mom: "I made my bed Katherine."

Kate: "Well, your beds gone."

Kate had gotten insurance on the home to take care of her mother. Her mother didn't want to be cared for, she was content with her unhappy life. It's her mother who turns Kate in. But Kate starts to run and that's when the tragedy compounds itself over and over again. Kate leaves destruction everywhere she stops long enough. She and Sawyer are closer than she would like to think they are. Both had childhoods lost to some sort of parental neglect. Both killed to remedy their problem. Both never took responsibility for what they have done.

Kate first sees the black horse when she is able to get away from the law. She is driving away from the lawman from the plane when she sees the black horse for the first time. She feels she is going insane when on the island the black horse returns.

Horse: The black horse if funerary and heralds death and symbolizes chaos; it appears at the twelve days of chaos between the old and new year. Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols by J.C. Cooper

Running for both Kate and Sawyer has equalled chaos. Both running on the negative energy of rage and the fear of being caught. Both became the types of people they sought to avoid. Irony at it's best.

When Kate tended to Sawyer, he seemed the channel her dead father:

Sawyer/Wayne: "Good for nothing. You killed me! Why did you kill me?"

Kate runs away and when confronted by Jack she can only say:

Kate: "I'm sorry if I'm not as perfect as you!"

She kisses Jack, then again runs. She ends up at Shannons grave where she confesses to Sayid (everyone seems to confess to this guy, even without torture) some of her fears:

Kate: "Do you believe in ghosts, Sayid?"

Sayid: "I saw Walt in the forest before Shannon was shot, does that make me crazy?"

Kate ends up by Sawyer's side, trying to exorcise Walt, confessing what has driven her for so long.

Kate: "I hated you were a part of me. Every time I look at him, I see you...and it makes me sick.

That's when Sawyer wakes up not fully understanding what Kate is talking about. He asks:

Sawyer: "Are we saved yet?"

Kate: "No, not yet."

They end up outside where Kate again sees the Black Horse, but so does Sawyer, who can't miss "the big assed horse".

"The show is called 'Lost' because all the characters are lost in their lives," says Damon Lindelof, co-creator and executive producer of the show. "We're really telling redemptive stories. We show character flaws in the past, and explore ways these people can evolve on the island and redeem themselves."

Kate had a step-father who she loved and who left because her mother divorced him. She asked him why he didn't kill Wayne and his answer is something that should have gotten Kate to stop and think:

paraphrased: Father: I wanted to take you along with me.

Kate: Why didn't you kill him/Wayne?

Father: I don't have murder in my heart.

Both Kate and Sawyer have had murder in their hearts. Kate may have taken care of her need for a solution when the house blew up. Sawyer has killed one innocent person and still was able to tell Walt in the first season finale that he needed to kill the man who wrecked his life. Kate has carried the plane that symbolizes flight, and sees the Black Horse which symbolizes chaos and death. Both see the Black Horse, both need to stop. Each character we hear from has something in their past they need to atone for, crimes small and large. On this island they all have a chance to change who they have been, and in the case of Kate and Sawyer maybe become better than the murder that poisoned each of their hearts. Jack is who Kate is attracted to, but it's Sawyer who may cause the redemption both characters need.

I wonder if Ana Lucia is looking a bit better to some fans this week...;)
