actually, if a sequel were made, I'd love to see a prequel: the Book backstory, the Tam family meltdown, the civil war, it's frigging gold.

Have you seen the Official Visual Companion to Serenity? The best part of the book is Joss' 4 page "mee-mo" entitled The History of the Universe that lays out his future history, from the abandonment of Earth-That-Was to the "present day," including a much fuller picture of Mal's back story than we've had before. Since you were interested in some more civil war back story, thought you might find it interesting.

While I'm not sure if I'd like a full prequel, some flashback segments including Book would be fantastic. Personally I think we've seen enough of the war and the Tam family problems via flashback, in the pilot and Safe, but I would love to learn more of Inara's backstory, particularly with what Joss teases about it in the history and in a deleted scene from Serenity, which is in the screenplay and seems to have been filmed, because there are accompanying photographs.

The book is really indispensable. The prequel comic book to Serenity is also fantastic, as it sets up how the characters who left the ship came to leave the ship, as well as explains why the men with blue hands aren't seen in the film.
