Subject: Random notes on attendance - from the Midwest
In reply to: Masq 's message, ""Serenity" no. 2 at box office this weekend" on 20:17:03 10/02/05 Sun

For what it's worth - NO ONE save my 17 year old and his college age friends (who couldn't afford MSU / UofM tickets) was going to the movies this weekend in mid-Michigan.

Friday was the cross town rivalry football game, and Saturday was the Michigan State UofM game here in East Lansing. Festivities for that start Friday and go all weekend - and on Saturday, if you didn't time it just right, you couldn't get to the theater from where we live - because of the traffic. (Since Serenity wasn't showing at the 8 screen theater here in our end of town).

AND - it was sunny clear and cool here (three things it hasn't been all at one time since - APRIL). It was a weekend NOT to be inside - for ANY reason!

The high school fall-ball" (baseball) team had out of town games both Saturday and Sunday (where most of my friends were with their kids), and the minor sports were in full swing too. If the mom's weren't driving, cooking or cleaning up from an event at our houses - they/we were at a different command performance. It was just a busy busy weekend, and I honestly couldn't find ANYONE who didn't already have plans - other than the kids I actually took. And their response was interesting: they were "put off" by how the action would pause for the "one-liners" - they thought it broke up the flow, and was annoying. Huh.

My Mom was busy with local football and the MSU baseball team scrimages - and when she did get a free minute she hadn't planned on, she and her friend went to "That Jodie Foster film - because she's always good". Dan dodged the bullet all weekend because he's 15 and "I've never heard of it (on TV)", so he didn't want to ask his friends to go(?). And with the weather like it was, he and all the boys his age (who weren't playing baseball out of town) were making the most of their season passes at the golf course - since it could very well be snowing here next weekend.

I'll be taking some of my friends this coming weekend (since my kids don't have as many activities to be driven to). AND now that we have the official "TWO THUMBS UP" - it should be easier to get MY mom's crowd (and my 15 year old) moving in this direction.

Fall is a busy busy time - where the weekends are the only daylight time left to get yards and homes ready before it snows, and the school events drive both kids and parents to the wall. Outdoor activities and crisp sunny days remind us all that this is the "last hurrah", and free time is more often spent at apple orchards or the corn maze - than inside watching a movie. A summer opening would have been easier to corral people to, but I know the comepetition would have been stiffer as well.

I'm troubled to hear it may not stay in theaters very long, so let's take those reviews and run with them!! I certainly enjoyed the movie more a second time - and I'm hoping to enjoy it even more the third time!

Success is almost always luck, timing, and ability in that order. The movie is MORE than able, and the reviews are strong (luck - the critics "get it"), so I'll continue to try to keep things moving forward, because - you can't stop the signal, and if my friends and family miss this, it will be their loss.
