...because much of what Jung suggests is about opposites or unions of opposites but not all of those opposites are Ego/Shadow. The idea of 'the return of the repressed' and the concepts of introversion and extroversion apply equally well with Fred/Ilyria, not least because Fred (as Fred) has been seen to let her dark side come to the surface from time to time letting self-expression transcend morality when she feels this need. Gunn preventing her from extracting her revenge on Prof. Whatsisname is NOT POPULAR with her. Never has a "the Captain has to do this himself" situation been more in evidence.

I'm on thin ice talking about pathology because I don't really know but perhaps the seed of 'Ilyria's' calousness (tending towards general malevolence) is that Fred's need to exorcise this feeling of persecution was not satisfied, and possibly never could have been; though it can perhaps be ameliorated, incorporated, unified with its persecuting counterpart so as not to be so predominant.
