As someone trained in physics, I was also thinking of a physical principle, conservation of something or another (since I am not familar with the physics of magic, I am unsure what is being conserved but I definitely believe something is). You can't mess with nature with impunity. Given that this is my intellectual predisposition, I guess I tend to read this into the verse and pick up on instances where this is confirmed and maybe ignore those where it is violated. I do not think consistency is a hallmark of the Buffyverse (one among many examples - the effect of fire on a vampire: usually they die instaneously but in Redefinition, Darla and Dru do not disintegrate) but I am not really bothered all that much when things are a bit inconsistent. I do plan that the next time I view Buffy, I will be playinging close attention to a) Willow's use of magic for her own selfish benefit and b) how often are there repercussions? Gives me a reason to survey the verse again.
