Yes I understand why it is not considered among the very best episodes but even "Dead Man's Party" and "Some Assembly Required" received mention as favorites and I definitely thing GD II has more to offer.
A little over the top? Completely blew the top right off, that's one of the reasons I loved it. It seems somewhat inappropriate to even consider suspension of belief - I think BtVS required the complete abandonment of belief and this episode certainly was right up there in pushing the bounds. Again, this is one of the reasons I enjoyed it. The idea that you could blow up the high school along with the mayor and nary a peep was raised by any authorities. In real life, just how many politicians at all levels of government would have formed committees to address the destruction. Talk about the blame game. I loved this incongruity in the Buffyverse and in fact the involvement of non-Sunnydale government as an explicit plot device was one of the things I liked least about season 4. I understand the desire to gore the Industrial/Military/Scientific complex but I think the intrusion of outsiders into Sunnydale had a negative impact on the fantasy nature of the show.
