Subject: Re: Why a scythe - translation problem ?
In reply to: Sunshine 's message, "Why a scythe" on 14:54:03 10/27/05 Thu

In "End of Days", Buffy says something like :"I think it's some sort of scythe" - there's no explanation for why she thinks that.
Later on, however, while Willow & Giles are researching on the internet, they come across a symbol on some kind of mystical weapons website (why can't I find one of those ?).

GILES
(paces) "M" plus glottal stop is represented by a picture that's commonly thought to symbolize a sickle or a scythe. It's in thousands of carvings. In Egypt, throughout the ancient world

Since the people who made the carvings aren't around, we don't know what they called the weapon. The carving itself however, might look like a sickle or scythe (after all, we use a sideways "8" to represent infinity, which isn't exactly intuitive). Maybe the scholars who found the carvings made a reasonable but false assumption, based on the shape of the symbol ?
