The weapon in reality is medaeval in form but in End of Days we're told

WOMAN
Guardians. Women who want to help and protect you. We forged this centuries ago, halfway around the world.

BUFFY
Hence, the Luxor Casino theme.

WOMAN
Forged there, it was put to use right here...to kill the last pure demon that walked upon the Earth. The rest were already driven under. And then there were men here, and then there were monks. And then there was a town, and now there was you. And the scythe remained hidden.

Since by the time writing came into being the concept of a Bardiche-Guisarme was a long way off the distant memory of the weapon of the Slayer perhaps came to be represented by a more familiar object, and thus we have "The Scythe", complete with all its reaping connotations. Sunshine is quite right though, it's a pole-axe so "The Axe" would have been a better name, if less dramatic.
