I see your point. I can only say if Buffy was sleeping with me, I'd feel like I was a greater beneficiary than she was.

For me, season 5 begins with the question of Buffy, what she is, asked by Dracula (echoing Buffy's dream in Restless), and basically repeated and acknowledged by Buffy et the end of the Drac ep, and then it ends with the resolution of that question: Buffy is Dawn, the link between the mortal and the divine, the living energy beyond forms.

So in the context of the question "what is Buffy?" I think the end of their relationship is necessary. I think the voice of the show comes not in Riley's complaint about Buffy not needing him, but in Buffy's statement to Xander that "I don't need a boyfriend right now. I need to get comfortable just being with Buffy."

Xander, as Buffy's heart, idealizes Riley. So when Xander gives that speech to buffy in ITW, its really Buffy speaking to herself. She idealizes Riley. She thinks she needs, perhaps not Riley per se, but the relationship that she feels his presence provides. So she runs after him. But it all really represents a form of dysfunctional dependency that she ends up being better off without. "Riley's girlfriend" is not the correct answer to "What is Buffy?" Nor is "in a relationship," even though the heart may want it. Thank goodness Riley left or Dawn's fate could have been very different. It can be very lonely feeling alone, but its not always a bad thing.
