I understand the Black Thorn’s motivations. It is Angel’s that puzzle me. I see four possibilities: 1) Angel did not believe in the Shanshu 2) Angel believed in the Shanshu but did not think that he could really sign away a destiny, that the Black Thorn and/or the Senior Partners had no control over the Shanshu 3) Angel believed in the Shanshu but thought Connor represented it’s fulfillment or 4) Angel believed in the Shanshu and thought he really was signing away his destiny. For 1-3, signing the document was an empty gesture, no biggie. Only if Angel really believed that he was losing something does the signing represent a sacrifice. Of course, I believe Angel noted to Spike that it was highly unlikely that any of them were going to survive this action and that his destiny would be fulfilled in a dark alley behind the Hyperion (seems only fitting – most of the major events in Angel/Angelus’ life occurred in dark alleys).

I think if Angel attacked the Black Thorn for Connor’s sake, he was doing the boy no favor. The Senior Partners were still going to exist and they seem like a vindictive bunch, if you believe WR&H stories of the previous 75 year review. If I was an SP, I would go after any remaining members of Angel’s family. I would show all the folks in the other dimensions that screwing with the SP’s came with a price, a price that would be paid not just by Angel but also by all his loved ones. Probably the best way to protect Connor was to continue to run WR&H and maintain the status quo. However, that course of action would not provide the requisite stirring ending for our champion.
