Akilah sat beneath her tree, with Seren grazing a few feet away, watching the antics of the “carriage affair” with grin. What a bunch of silly fools; the knight, the horse-girl, the thief, the whole fewmented lot of them.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her side as a small dagger pierced through her leather jerkin. A gnome, no more than two or three feet tall, stood at the other end. "My tree," the leathery, yellowish character declared. Akilah reached out in an attempt to grab the little cretin’s throat and was rewarded with another wave of pain as he pulled the dagger out of her side and slashed her hand.
"Ouch! You’ll pay for that, you little bugger!" she said as she rose—-slowly because of the pain in her side—-and drew her sword.
Akilah was a fine swordswoman but she had never fought such a small opponent. Every time she tried to cut the ugly little thing’s head off he danced just out of reach and taunted her a second time, as if saying "You mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!". Soon Akilah was out of breath and far beyond frustrated. She leaned on her sword as the gnome grinned mischievously at her, barely out of striking range.
"Had enough yet, stupid Elf?" he smiled. This brought a new wave of fury over Akilah in which she attacked viciously, gained a number of new cuts, and got absolutely nowhere. Bofore long, she was leaning on her sword again and the gnome also resumed his previous position. "Really now, all you have to do is leave me tree alone," the gnome insisted, still grinning, "and I’ll stop."
"Ha!" Akilah gasped, "And admit defeat to a gnome? Fat chance! I’d fry in fish oil first!"
"As it pleases you, lady Elf," he bowed with a flourish. "But I’ll have you know none have ever survived an encounter with The Mad Gnome Protector of the Great Yew Tree unless they conceded defeat and left the premises." Akilah lunged forward with a smile, thinking she would catch the gnome off guard, missed him completely and felt his dagger slide clear through her side. “Apologies lady elf,” the gnome looked down at her “But Asim warned you.”
Akilah smiled up at him, “It was a jolly fight.” Then her eyes closed for the last time.
