Not having one at all is probably a lot less painful than having one that you can't see... Still, she would've liked to have had a sister or a brother, just so when her father went over the top, she could've had someone to turn to for reassurance. That no longer mattered now, and she wouldn't let that thought spoil her evening. Unsure of how to respond to his final words, she just nods and takes the final bite of her steak to keep her mind focused on the task of chewing rather than remembering.
