The stars twinkled in their velvety bed and the moon hid behind a cloud. Two hooded figures slinked out of the Abbey and dashed over to the strawberry patch. They were going to save the strawberry trees.
“Peach! ‘Urry up!” The little grey mousebabe pulled his friends hand, as she had stopped to stare at the stars.
“I’m comin’,” she yawned sleepily then rubbed her eyes to stay awake. They picked their way to the center of the path and sat down. Now it was the grey mouse’s turn to yawn. Sleepy-eyed they sat back-to-back in the middle of the strawberry patch.
“How much longer ‘til the strawberry tees grow up?” Peach muttered as her head began to nod. The only answer she got was a soft snoring. A few minutes later and she joined her friend in slumber.
Peach was startled awake. She rubbed her pink eyes and looked around to see what had woken her. The moon had come out from behind a cloud and now illuminated the garden. She heard a noise like the creaking of tree branches and leaves rustling in the wind. She turned to look behind her as her friend’s head hit the ground. She gave an awed gasp, and then sat in silence, her pink eyes round in amazement. Slowly she started to rouse her friend, “Wake a up! Look, look!” She pointed frantically. A tree had grown up on the other side of the patch. It’s green leaves were spade shaped and it had tiny white flowers in bloom. Peach’s companion slowly woke up; greeted by Peach’s excited whispers, “Hurry, look!”
The little white flowers were gone now. Swiftly little red berries filled their places. And they grew bigger and bigger so that by the time the little grey mouse fully woke up there was a fully-grown strawberry tree on the other side of the strawberry patch.
“Whoawow!” The little mousebabe got up and went directly for the strawberry tree. Peach followed for a moment and them raced ahead. When she reached the tree she immediately climbed up and sat in the branches and started to eat the big juicy berries. They sat there eating, comparing, and admiring the berries. Suddenly a strong wind began to blow. Peach hangs on doggedly. “Oh no! The twees gonna bwow away!” The grey mouse shrieked.
“Nuh-uh!” Peach yelled back, “We too big toa blow away! Hang on!” The winds howled around them. They hung on and in ten minuets the winds lessoned up. The wind stopped as the dibbuns heads began to droop again. Dawn was a couple hours away and the strawberry tree was still there.

The next morning Mother Mellus came down into the patch to collect strawberries for breakfast. She looked up in the tree and saw the two dibbuns fast asleep. “Hey you two! What are you doing in that tree? You’re gonna have to have a bath. You come down here right this instant…” Peach and the little grey mousebabe looked at each other and smiled. Ma Mellus would have to catch them first!
