Subject: RETRO POST: GPW Review 05/11/2000

GPW at the North Sydney Forum
June 11, 2000

Props to SMCSMAN for citing Janus...

1. Tommy Valentine vs Todd the Bod (**1/4)

Call me crazy, but I think that Todd might be the best worker under the Forum roof. Some sloppiness on Valentine's part lowers the ranking a bit as well as the cop-out ending. What is it with Emile and his perpetual inconclusive booking at the beginning of a card? Nicely paced opener.

2. "Maddog" Stan Neilson vs Bobby Rude (**3/4)

This week, Neilson actually uses the heel heat he attains to work a good match; kudos to him. Rude didn't look too bad this week, but he was a little sloppy as well. Match loses out on a *** star opportunity because of the ending, but the two worked a smart match. If they keep feuding, I can see some **** matches evolving.

3. The Beast vs Rick Valentine Jr. (DUD)

Not only a weak match, but a weak ending. Why does Emile keep bringing the Beast back? I think that Cuban is terrible too but at least people react to him. The silence in this match was nothing short of embarrassing and quite frankly, I think it's degrading that the Beast thinks that he needs to come out and do this in the year 2000.

4. The Cuban Assassin vs Big Al the Godfather (DUD)

You know what's sad? Cuban was sort of actually trying and this match was still a dud. Two weeks ago, Big Al was stiff as hell, this week he wouldn't have dented a pane of candy glass. Find the happy medium, already!

5. Bobby Rude/Todd the Bod vs Stan Neilson/Tommy Valentine (***)

Best GPW match of 2000 thus far. Great work on all four men's behalf. What made the match work despite the men having worked earlier was that the whole match didn't just build around one hot tag, but a few "mini-hot tags." Solid crowd reaction as well.

6. "Wildman" Austin vs Chi Chi Cruz (* 3/4)

These men can do much better. It earns a 1/2* for working towards the brawl, rather than nonsensically working a garbage match out of nowhere. Still, the pacing was awkward; more suited towards a 40-50 minute match than 20 minutes. The ending was anti-climatic as well.

Highest match ranking: *** (Rude/Todd v Neilson/Valentine)
Lowest match rankings: DUD (Beast v Valentine, Cuban v Big Al)
Avg. match ranking: bet. * 1/2 and * 3/4
Event ranking: **

The four men in the tag match COMPLETELY carried this show. That's a shame because if you axe the two middle matches and let Austin-Chi Chi work a marathon (and they seem dead set on trying even when you only give them 18 minutes), you would have a three-to-four star event on your hands. The inconclusive booking at the beginning can be forgiven in lieu of building to the tag match but would it kill Beast or Cuban to do the job and leave town altogether?

The prospects for next week's show don't look promising because I suspect a lot of people will drop out due to the WWF PPV. Emile had a chance to impress with this week's event but ended up delivering a more lukewarm result.
