Subject: RETRO POST: GPW Review 05/28/2000

GPW at the North Sydney Forum
May 28, 2000

This is completely re-posted out of memory. I'm going to ATTEMPT to write it as I originally wrote it so there's no need to read it unless a) you didn't read it the first time or b) you want to keep it for posterity.

1) Tommy Valentine vs Bobby Rude (** 1/4)

Best-paced match of the night, IMO. Match loses 1/2* for the predictable and unsatisfying result. Both men show a lot of promise.

2) Stan Neilson vs Rene Dupre (* 1/2)

Disappointing. Neilson worked the crowd up into frenzy, getting great heel heat, but then he didn't go anywhere with it. Rene didn't look too bad in there, though.

3) Big Al vs Todd the Bodd (**)

Todd worked his butt off here and salvaged something decent with his less-than-lacklustre opponent, including an impressive dive to the outside of the ring. Al worked very stiff in this match as Todd emerged from the match with some welts.

4) Wildman vs Chi Chi Cruz (** 3/4)

The pacing to this match was somewhat awkward. I'm all for restholds used properly but the match was lagging at times. Still, it was the most logically worked match of the night and heated up nicely in the end.

5) Rick Valentine Jr. vs Cuban Assasin (* 1/2)

The * 1/2 comes entirely from the last 1-2 minutes of the match. Cuban actually bumped! Too bad that he can't work worth a squat. Valentine picked it up near the end as well. Match ended just when it was getting interesting.

Highest match ranking: ** 3/4 (Cruz v Austin)
Lowest match rankings: * 1/2 (Dupre v Neilson, Valentine v Cuban)
Avg. match ranking: Approx. **
Event ranking: **

The night was pretty introductory to say the least. It was very much "pay $10 for this show and we'll give you reasons to pay $10 for the next show instead." Last year, we became accustomed to ***-**** star Joe E-Chi Chi matches and we also became accustomed to DUDs; so in a sense we were spoiled and tortured. The action on this card was spread out more evenly. Still, with the promise of more "legends" coming in the next few weeks, the DUD factor will probably come into play which means that everyone else will have step it up to save the shows.
