RAW at the North Sydney Forum
June 21, 2001

I decided to post my four Grand Prix recaps last year in preparation for my return to critiquing shows at the North Sydney Forum. This was my first live Cape Breton wrestling show in almost a year and my, how things have changed. GPW has gone the way of Beta, the new Coke, and WCW: slaughtered by its own inept marketing. Bring on the Real Action Wrestling...

1. Eddy Watts vs. Acadian Giant (** 1/2)

Workrate-wise, this match didn't set the world afire, but it was a great example of two people getting the most mileage out of what they can do. This was my first look at Watts. While he isn't much to look at, he is extremely expressive which is a very positive trait to have when you take the first two to three minutes or more of your match out for stalling and lockups. He is also agile as well. Fairly ordinary match with good crowd heat. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that these two chopped each other to pieces; AG emerged rather welted. Good selection for the opener, although somehow the chokeslam and pin seemed a bit anti-climatic.

2. Mike Hughes vs. Buddy Lane (** 3/4)

I really don't remember much about the match itself. Lane shows some age facially but is in very good shape. Good pace. Lane wins and Hughes/Kingman lay a brief beating before Giant makes the save to set up a tag match. We're a man short tonight, I guess.

3. Massive Attack vs. Cpl. Kaos (*)

Worth a star because there was some decent action buried in there somewhere. But a Rhino wannabe against a masked guy that evidently no one cares about? Recipe for boredom.

4. Acadian Giant & Buddy Lane vs. Kingman & Mike Hughes (** 1/2)

Another reasonably solid match. The one thing I have to dock this match for was the clumsy execution of the finish. Acadian Giant and Kingman each have a pin set up and the Giant's doesn't count because he's not legal. This is despite the fact that he made the tag that the ref kinda sorta saw...which if he didn't, why didn't he send him back to his corner? The idea for the finish was good for setting up Kingman-Giant, but it could have been done better. Save for a couple of small miscues, the action was fine. I predict that the audience will really be into the "battle of the giants."

5. Chi Chi Cruz vs. Bobby Rude (****)

Chi Chi looked great tonight; the same motivated man that tore down the Forum in '99 with Joe E Legend. This was my first time watching Rude this year and I am impressed with the strides that he has made. A damn good solid match from these two with plenty of crowd involvement, a great mix of high impact moves with mat wrestling, and well thought-out pacing. Hughes helps Rude win to set up a Cruz-Rude falls-count-anywhere rematch with Hughes banned from ringside. Those who know me know I've already got a booking planned for that match, but I won't say it here.

Highest match ranking: **** (Cruz v Rude)
Lowest match ranking: * (Caos v Attack)
Avg. match ranking: ** 1/2
Event ranking: ***

In the immortal words of English professor Mike Manson "Put your weak stuff in the middle and finish with a flourish." Only one match beneath ** 1/2 tonight and it was in the middle. The one match above ** 3/4 was the last match. While this wasn't a blowaway event, it was a good little indie show that more importantly set the table well for the next card. Ditch the hardcore title and I'd be happy to see action like this in July and August.
