Real Action Wrestling at the Whycocomagh & Area Arena
July 8, 2001

Y'know, it's true that BMN is a cynical bastard, but he's got his fun side. The fact that four guys could drive an hour and a half to see a show in front of a crowd that made Herb Abrams' UWF gatherings look like the running of the bulls in comparison and have a great time is a testament to why I still cling to following pro wrestling no matter how much it frustrates me in the run of a week. Life is good. Drink Coke. Or a PC if it's handy.

The ring is set up dead centre so as to exaggerate the utter lack of attendance in a building that's in the middle of nowhere.

The Kardinal Sinners state that they're on the look out for a fourth man. Massive Damage comes out to "audition." I swear we could hear everything these guys were saying. Every word. Damage says that Jesse and Nick (points to the corner of the arena at no one in particular) are his biggest fans and that he should be the fourth man. Kingman and Hughes discuss the matter:

Kingman: "I like him."
Hughes: "You like him?"
Kingman: "Yeah."
Hughes: "What's to like about this guy?"
Kingman: "What's not to like?!?"

Nonetheless, the trio rejects him which of course leads to the return of Joe E Legend: shorter hair than 1999 but longer than 2000 and with a fancier look. He acknowledges our small contigence with a "North Sydney, Nova Scotia, what a freakin' dump!!" After an amusing exchange, Joe E says that he'll consider joining up. They do have their own T-shirt after all. Joe: "Vince never gave me a T-shirt." The Sinners are convinced: "He's joining us, oh yeah, he's definitely joining us." Apparently they don't heed history. Especially one-night-ago-Antigonish history.

1. Eddy Watts vs. Buddy Lane (** 1/2)

See June 5, 2001.

2. Custom Made Man vs. Massive Damage (**)

See June 5, 2001 but shorten the match and add Jesse and Nick. Still not a great match but far more amusing.

3. Mike Hughes vs. Wildman Williams (** 1/4)

Davey: "What, no valet tonight?" Seconds later, Cathy gives that all knowing smirk when Williams comes around for handshakes. Decent match with Williams winning by DQ when Kingman runs in. Which leads to Joe E wearing the Sinners shirt coming to the ring. Which of course means that he decks Kingman. Joe exchanges words with Hughes/Kingman and of course reminds us that "heroes come, heroes go, but legends are forever." Kingman: "We never wanted you anyway; I wanted the retarded guy myself."

We now have a clear division of the top three faces (Chi Chi, Williams, Joe E) and the top heels (Kardinal Sinners). Gee, that wasn't so hard, was it, Emile?

Chi Chi challenges Bobby Rude to a- get this- regular match. I'm actually interested now.

4. Joe E Legend vs. Kingman (**)

Pretty ordinary bout with Kingman looking particularly lethargic and Joe E resorting mostly to punches before the smaller crowd. Another DQ as Damage comes to help Kingman. But even that is botched. Joe E cuts one more promo to end his second night back; he's especially articulate: "You are such - a - bitch."

5. A regular "I can get DQ'ed, you can get DQ'ed" match: Chi Chi Cruz vs. Bobby Rude (***)

A ton of clowning but I'm not docking too much for that because a) it was necessary with the smaller crowd and b) Cruz and Rude are so good at it. Rude has legit the best heel schtick I've seen here since the wrestling returned to the Maritimes in 1997. The "velvet panties" chant seemed to be quite appreciated in Whycocomagh. The finish was particularly good with Cruz pulling a nice reverse cradle out of his back pocket for the win.

Highest match ranking: *** (Cruz v Rude)
Lowest match ranking: ** (Custom Made v Damage, Joe E v Kingman)
Avg. match ranking: between ** and ** 1/2
Event ranking: ***

Just a fun little show. No match beneath ** because of the audience intimacy involved. As I told Davey at the beginning, it felt more like a local theatre production than a wrestling show, with so much dialogue being thrown about and being so clearly audible. It's easier to please 40 people without exerting yourself too much then to please 200 people who each like something different.

While not in a top match on this night, Joe E was in top promo form and looks ready to go, which means that the North Sydney Forum will be in full tilt on July 19th. As always, Mr. Hitchen was super accomodating, posing and signing with some fans and chatting with the eastern Cape Breton representatives afterwards. Chi Chi jumped in at the end with a little bit of conversation at the end.

I won't reveal his exact comments because I always take these conversations to be somewhat off-the-record with a bit of work thrown in, but I will say the topics that were covered. Such as:

- What he's heard about Hulk Hogan's potential promotion.
- His opinion of his Just Joe gimmick, and how working WWF matches differed from his indy experiences.
- Why he felt he was never teamed up with Scott Vick, as was heavily rumoured.
- The personalities in the WWF locker room that he disliked.
- His thoughts on wrestling in England (as well as a particular English wrestler that some WWF friends "turned him on to").
- What he's heard about working in XPW.
- The story behind his feud with Chi Chi in 1999 and how it revealed he and Emile Dupre's differences in booking philosophy.
- An amusing tale of his meeting Tammy Lynn Sytch for the first time in Ontario.
- Chi Chi discussed the super-hot angle of 2000 that didn't pan out between he and Rene, and his approach in working the match following "the big angle."

As always, Joe was great to talk to. With a smaller crowd to deal with, you could tell that he was at ease to talk to some more devoted fans without worrying about being too indunated. I also think it's visibly obvious from observing this crew in a smaller setting that they are at ease as of late and seem to be enjoying themselves. With Joe back, and an even 3-on-3 face-heel feud with a heckuva lot of talent, the next North Sydney, Port Hawksbury and Halifax should definitely be barn-burners.
