Subject: Match Rankings/General Comments/CCM/Massive Damage
In reply to: BMN 's message, "RAW review 07/08/2001" on 09:00:39 07/10/01 Tue

I`m going to try to cover the whole thread in one response, hence the odd title...
No match times for this show, as I lost the sheet with them. I do remember approximations.

>The fact that four guys could
>drive an hour and a half to see a show in front of a
>crowd that made Herb Abrams' UWF gatherings look like
>the running of the bulls in comparison and have a
>great time is a testament to why I still cling to
>following pro wrestling no matter how much it
>frustrates me in the run of a week.
True enough... also interesting that one of our passengers hadn`t seen Joe in action, but made the trip because he`d heard the hype. He wasn`t disappointed! (Hey Greatest, start posting here already!)

>The ring is set up dead centre so as to exaggerate the
>utter lack of attendance in a building that's in the
>middle of nowhere.
I actually like this setup. I could care less if the building looks empty- the ring at centre feels right. Also, it would have been better if Chi Chi/Rude had switched their matches and worked a hardcore match here- you wouldn`t have to walk to follow it.
And they could do some cool bumps with the zamboni and net!

>The Kardinal Sinners state that they're on the look
>out for a fourth man. Massive Damage comes out to
>"audition."
It was a surprise to hear "Iron Man". I had heard about the angle but I didn`t know about the Massive Damage part.

>Kingman: "I like him."
>Hughes: "You like him?"
>Kingman: "Yeah."
>Hughes: "What's to like about this guy?"
>Kingman: "What's not to like?!?"

Hilarious stuff! Perhaps a take-off of how the big heels in the WWF have been acting lately, Hughes/Kingman served up
their own equally as entertaining comedy in Whycogomagh. They were almost faces in doing so, and Kingman almost helped get Damage over as the "helpless" face.

>Nonetheless, the trio rejects him which of course
>leads to the return of Joe E Legend: shorter hair
>than 1999 but longer than 2000 and with a fancier
>look.
We didn`t even pop at first seeing him; I was almost positive it WAS him, but he was so different.
He used "No More Tears" by Ozzy Osbourne- great music choice!

>He acknowledges our small contigence with a
>"North Sydney, Nova Scotia, what a freakin' dump!!"
Just awesome. It was great to say it, but it won`t lose its appeal if he does it next time becuase EVERYONE will be doing it.

>After an amusing exchange, Joe E says that he'll
>consider joining up. They do have their own T-shirt
>after all. Joe: "Vince never gave me a T-shirt."
Joe has still got it on the mike, and he`s in great shape.

>1. Eddy Watts vs. Buddy Lane
Match Ranking: ** 1/2
>See June 5, 2001.
Pretty much. This was a very unique experience, watching a show that was primarly the same. We watched to see if the spots would be the same, and for the most part, they were.
This match went about the same time as well. It was probably slightly better than the North Sydney match, but no real differences.
Well, one. I timed Watts`s obligatory heel stalling to start both matches- it was something like 2.5 minutes in North Sydney, but only 1.5 in Whycogomagh.
The first match of the night also guarenteed that we wouldn`t see all repeats of the North Sydney show- as Josh Williams was the ref. Of course, Williams is Corporal Chaos... so even not knowing the results of the Antiginosh show, you could pencil in Joe E/Kingman.
I think it was during this match I may have got Williams agitated. He asked the fans if hair was pulled, foot was on the ropes, etc. I said, "They`re not paying me to ref!" I was generally cooperative the rest of the night, I just wanted to use that line...

>2. Custom Made Man vs. Massive Damage
Match Ranking: **1/2

An incredible jump in quality for these two from their other match. This match was much "tighter", going 13 minutes instead of 16- cutting out the nothing that ruined the flow of the North Sydney encounter.
The sequence were they did the pinfalls flowed a lot better.
Davey might be on to something- this match would have been even better if roles were reversed.
CCM doesn`t seem to completely the crowd going for him (although we were pretty much the life of this crowd!) He has trouble. He got heat as heel, but he was probably turned face due to the positive reaction.
Of course, that was probably because people found his manager Autobon (spelling) funny.
On the other side of the coin, people really took to Massive Damage`s routine. The Jesse/Nick stuff was funny...
It should also be noted that during this match, we started a "gore" chant, in hopes of him doing the same joke that he did at the North Sydney show. It didn`t work, but some kids down the row from us got into it at least. I liked getting the people to cheer!

>3. Mike Hughes vs. Wildman Williams
My Match Ranking: **1/4

>Davey: "What, no valet tonight?" Seconds later,
>Cathy gives that all knowing smirk when Williams comes
>around for handshakes.
Hard to believe that Williams has become such a pandering face- he never used to do the handshakes! Cathy has him soft heheheh! Actually that`s good if they want to do the face/heel thing at the top, which would get big heat.
This was a shorter match I believe (around the 7 minute mark as opposed to the 9 minute match in North Sydney).
A funny exchange in this match: Hughes kept his "in ring mike work" up as usual, frequently saying, "Come on Austin!"
Me: It`s Williams!
Hughes: Yeah, whatever he wants to call himself...

Davey didn`t mention this, but in his words with Wildman, he mentioned how the finish was different than in the North Sydney show. Wildman said, "Yeah we`ve go to mix up for you marks!" or something like that- great stuff! This guy catches on to/plays with the audience so well.

>Which leads to
>Joe E wearing the Sinners shirt coming to the ring.
>Which of course means that he decks Kingman.
Harder to pop for this when we knew it was coming. But...

>Joe
>exchanges words with Hughes/Kingman and of course
>reminds us that "heroes come, heroes go, but legends
>are forever."
That I MARKED OUT FOR!

>Kingman: "We never wanted you anyway;
>I wanted the retarded guy myself."
Funny stuff, and great continuity.

>We now have a clear division of the top three faces
>(Chi Chi, Williams, Joe E) and the top heels (Kardinal
>Sinners). Gee, that wasn't so hard, was it, Emile?
Imagine that. Perhaps a big six man tag in the future?

>4. Joe E Legend vs. Kingman
My Match Ranking: **
(I`m agreeing with BMN a lot tonight!)
Can`t really say anything not already said about this match.

>5. A regular "I can get DQ'ed, you can get DQ'ed"
>match: Chi Chi Cruz vs. Bobby Rude (***)

>A ton of clowning but I'm not docking too much for
>that because a) it was necessary with the smaller
>crowd and b) Cruz and Rude are so good at it.
This match wasn`t at all like the one in North Sydney. It was a bit longer which allowed for all of the clowning around.

>Rude
>has legit the best heel schtick I've seen here since
>the wrestling returned to the Maritimes in 1997.
I believe Cathy said it, no one throws a better hissy fit. Watching him respond to Chi Chi`s "zip it"/"ssh" is hilarious.

>The
>"velvet panties" chant seemed to be quite appreciated
>in Whycocomagh.
I wonder if they will chant that next show.
Also, the guy at the back table started that chant up a few times! "Audience" participation!

Another funny spot in this match. Rude was doing the generic heel schtick, and Chi Chi was all the way against the ropes on the other side of the ring.

Rude: Back him up ref!
Davey: If he went back any further, he`d be in Port Hawksbury!
Rude: Good place for him!

>It's easier to please 40 people without
>exerting yourself too much then to please 200 people
>who each like something different.
True. We talk about small crowds in North Sydney and playing with the crowd, but at this show you could LITERALLY play to every fan that was on the floor.

>While not in a top match on this night, Joe E was in
>top promo form and looks ready to go, which means that
>the North Sydney Forum will be in full tilt on July
>19th.
I`m even more hyped for the North Sydney show after seeing that he still has it.

>As always, Mr. Hitchen was super accomodating,
>posing and signing with some fans and chatting with
>the eastern Cape Breton representatives afterwards.
>Chi Chi jumped in at the end with a little bit of
>conversation at the end.
Class acts all the way.

>I won't reveal his exact comments because I always
>take these conversations to be somewhat off-the-record
>with a bit of work thrown in, but I will say the
>topics that were covered.
One topic you forgot was the booking in RAW itself.

>As always, Joe was great to talk to. With a smaller
>crowd to deal with, you could tell that he was at ease
>to talk to some more devoted fans without worrying
>about being too indunated.
He`ll be mobbed in North Sydney! That was a preview of things to come.

Overall, a pretty good show, better than the one in North Sydney. Something that was interesting was that even though some of it was the same. Davey said something like, "Does it even matter that it`s all the same?"
And it didn`t. We had fun nonetheless... although it should be mentioned (and we forgot this at times!) that the Greatest (soon to be posting?) wasn`t at the North Sydney show and hadn`t seen it all.
Good booking all the way through (good way to debut Joe, and create a new character for Massive Damage; also added some dimension to the heel characters.) Solid in ring action to boot.
