Subject: Match Rankings/Times/General Comments
In reply to: BMN 's message, "RAW review 07/05/2001" on 06:33:52 07/10/01 Tue

>Real Action Wrestling at the North Sydney Forum
>July 5, 2001

>How did BMN end up like his brother- struggling to
>catch up with posting assignments?
I don`t know... but that leads me to a "decision". Given that I never seem to have the time to do my own recaps, I`ll just wait until you post yours and then add my comments, and match rankings.

>So of
>course, CCM comes out to inform Hughes that he is
>indeed back.
I think that they were naively expecting a bigger reaction here- CCM was never on this "leg" of the tour in our area (to my memory), and he definitely wasn`t in North Sydney. I was happy to see him back though.

>All in all, not a spectacular segment but it allowed
>Hughes to once again run wild with the word "stupid"
>and it set up two returns and a debut.
I guess that`s replaced "Huh?", which has been passed on to Bobby Rude now.

>1. Eddy Watts vs. Buddy Lane
My Match Ranking: **1/2
Time: 10:22

>Not too bad. Lane is Mr. Vanilla but he's able to
>carry a good flow to a match and I'll take that over
>someone with forced charisma who can't work. Does
>anyone wonder if he wouldn't make a better heel?
I`ve always thought that about old school wrestlers that tend to use a lot of restholds. Unless you`re working in and out of them with a lot of impact manoeuvres, it`s hard to keep the crowd on your side.
Of course Lane is the sympathetic face because of his "legendary" status.

>Watts takes it with a stun gun. Watts is a solid heel
>for an indy show; able to find a few fans and run with
>their criticisms. Some good mat work here.
Watts is pretty much the generic heel- he does the whole stalling before the match bit and everything. I was more impressed with him this week though; the stungun was a nice addition to the aresneal (spelling?).
Watts DOES need to tone down the stalling tactics though; doing it for 2+ minutes (I timed it) TWO STRAIGHT weeks won`t fly. (See my yet to be posted response on the Whycogomagh show for more on this.)

>2. Kingman vs. Cpl. Chaos
My Match Ranking: None
Time: 2:23
I can`t rate a squash match. I consider a ** match to be decent. I can`t really describe this as a decent match. Yet it was never boring and accomplished what it was supposed to do.

>A squash, but I give it a star for accomplishing what
>it was supposed to do. Get Kingman over in the stead
>of Acadian Giant not being here.
It also should be noted that it was a good use for Chaos. Perhaps he can a proper learning by bumping around a lot. He may even become the sympathetic loser face that Mike Hughes was in North Sydney in 1999!

>3. Custom Made Man vs. Massive Damage
My Match Ranking: *3/4
Time: 16:56

>So don't ask me for any screwups or lack of moves that
>contributed to me ranking this match so low.
I can`t really think of any big screwups in this match, although there were flubs in the pinning sequence. It showed- usually it ends with the two men standing and the crowd clapping. The crowd was reluctant to clap at this time.

>All I
>can tell you is that the match had ZERO flow.
For the most part, yes. I found that the match came together in the final minutes. The problem was it wasn`t the "build up was worth sitting through" come together. There just wasn`t any flow to the beginning parts of the match, but some decent spots. The end had both.

>Often
>wrestlers can overcome that in front of an spot-hungry
>audience that cares about them. Not in this case,
>with many people having soured on Damage and never
>seen Custom Made.
I was excited about seeing CCM back, and I was disappointed with the match result- but I`m not that big on Massive Damage, and I didn`t see much chemistry.

>4. Wildman Williams (with Cat.., er Wildgirl) vs. Mike
>Hughes
My Match Ranking: **1/4
Time: 9:34

>Started off pretty good, but a double countout and a
>lackluster flourish brought it down a notch. Williams
>still looks in great shape.
Willaims hasn`t lost a step conditioning wise. The talent in the ring was there, but the heat/intangibles messed around it. Obviously, a DQ ending is never condusive to a great match.
However, there wasn`t as much heat as there should have been for the match- and there were a few reasons for it.
"Wildgirl" would be one (sorry Cathy!) Nothing really done that wrong here, but it`s to be expected when you debut a manager in her hometown. So when Wildman came out for the match, most of the crowd who know who Cathy was (I`m venturing a lot of people, based on her friends/people on message boards) were more curious than they were ready to pop for Wildman. When people know it`s coming next show, things should be back to normal.
However, that wasn`t the biggest problem. A lot can be said about a name; it just wasn`t the same having "Wildman Gary Williams" coming to the ring. Yes, he`s the same preformer; but it just didn`t "feel right". And we certainly couldn`t start any "Austin" chants!
Once people get used to the changes, things should be back to normal. Could be a while before hearing "Wildman Gary Williams" seems normal though!
Another reason for the lack of big league heat was the anticipation for the falls count anywhere main event; despite that fact, it was still basically a battle between RAW main eventers.

>We are informed that Joe E Legend will be back in the
>house that he built on the 19th. The wheels were
>already in motion to travel to Whycocomagh.
That was obviously done. He got a decent pop for the name, although a lot of Joe E fans weren`t there, and will be returning when he comes back.

>5. Falls Count Anywhere: Chi Chi Cruz vs. Bobby Rude
My Match Ranking: **1/2
Time: 10:54

>A bit insipid with the brawling at the beginning
>(built a little too quickly) but I thought the last
>few minutes was really good solid action.
I`m very much NOT into the walk around brawls- they usually contain a lot of nothing, and they are very hard to watch all of, even if you are walking around. A match like that would be better suited to Whycogomagh, because you could see it!
I have to agree with Davey though, the pin under the ring was innovative and funny. The sequence when they got back into the ring was sweet but short. They should have given this match extra time instead of the Damage/CCM match that went too long.

> A great exchange of promos,
>especially when Rude reminds Chi Chi that things are
>different now, "this isn't Atlantic Grand Prix
>Wrestling!!"
MARK OUT MOMENT of the year! I couldn`t believe he said that, but I loved it.

>I was waiting for him to say that the
>Sinners were held down there or what not, but that
>didn't happen.
That would have been great, and it would have made sense- Chi Chi and Austin were main events in both GPW and RAW, whereas the Sinners are only now reaching the top of the card. Of course Kingman did have some top matches in GPW.

>So they've made a pretty positive
>impression overall, and Joe E will be a huge boost to
>the roster.
The workrate has gone way up in the promotion with Williams/Joe E/CCM all coming back.

>Consider this: Joe E was a heel and had
>half the crowd cheering him like gangbusters. What
>will happen with him as a full-fledged face?
>Something to chew on and look forward to for the next
>show.
This could be interesting. On one hand, he`ll probably lose a few of his supporters from last time (because it won`t be as "cool" to cheer a face, or those people may have been turned off the product altogther.)
But the old Joe E fans may have bred new fans (I have done this myself!) and the more markish fans will be into him also if he`s fighting the Sinners.
Makes me wonder if he will keep the catchphrase though (the North Sydney one).

I liked the booking overall on the show- Watts/Lane was the perfect opener, and Kingman stays the destructive heel by squashing Chaos. The last two matches nicely set up the alliances in the top tier, and Kingman/Joe E even them out nicely.
Overall, probably a slight thumbs up show... one "bad" match and no awful ones. Still, this promotion is UNDERachivieving. Perhaps Joe in the long term will help out.
