WILLPOWER PART 2x01: BELIEF

Black screen.
KENNEDY (Voiceover) *serious*
I once heard a myth about a man who was punished by the gods and had to roll a big rock on top of a
mountain. And every time the man got close, the rock rolled down again and the man had to start all
over again.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Well, we have a similar problem in Sunnydale. It's a center of evil. Me and my friends fight that
evil.... only to discover that something else will take it's place. It's always that way, so I'm
going to write down how we fight that evil.
KENNEDY (voiceover) *upbeat*
But let me start at the beginning.
The screen now shows Kennedy sitting behind a desk, writing in a small book.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Hi, I'm Kennedy; a potential slayer. Being a potential means that you don't get the strength,
speed and constitution of the slayer, but you *do* get her responsibilities and the frequent
exposure to death..... not the best deal, I know.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
But of course, being a potential, you know everything about that.
On the screen now appears Giles and Willow, who are working the books at the magic box.
There is no sound. Only Kennedy's voice. The camera zooms in on Giles.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Giles is my watcher. He's pretty cool for such an old guy. He's smart and he has a lot of
experience. Just what every potential needs. He's also the reason I'm writing this. He figured
this will help other potentials later. Well... whatever.
Camera zooms out and we see Willow and Giles talking. We still don't hear anything.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Willow is sort of the leader of our group. She's studying with Giles to be watcher. She's also
a really powerful witch. From time to time, the magic is too much for her. But there's nothing she
can't handle.
Camera zooms out.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Oh, I almost forgot....
Camera zooms back in to Willow.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
She's totally my girlfriend. Isn't that cool?
Camera fades to black and then we appear at the Summers' home living room. We can see Xander, Dawn and Andrew watching TV.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
I live in a house together with Willow and Dawn. Dawn is quite a bit younger than us, but she's
pretty mature for her age. She's the sister of Buffy Summers; a slayer, who's been missing for
almost half a year now. One weird thing about her... she's better with the crossbow than me.
That can't be right.
Camera moves left towards Xander.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
The other two members of our team are Xander and Andrew. Xander is the kind of guy that helps
wherever he can, whenever he can. He doesn't have any special powers or skills, other than fixing
the windows... but he's still there for us. I like him.
Camera moves towards Andrew.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Andrew also hasn't got any special powers and skills. He's also the biggest nerd you could ever
imagine. Well, he also helps... but he's no good in fixing the windows... or anything else for that
matter. Well, he helps in the fighting sometimes. What more is there to say about him?
Camera zooms out a little. We now see Dawn has her head on Andrew's shoulder.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Oh... right! He's Dawn's boyfriend. Don't ask me what she sees in him. Oh well...
Camera moves back to Kennedy writing at a desk, just like before.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
So I'm supposed to describe here how we fight the forces of darkness. Well, that's what I'll do then.
Living in a demon-crowded town like Sunnydale will ensure many entries.... if I don't get killed that
is. Isn't life on the hellmouth great?

Giles and Kennedy are standing in the back of the Magic Box.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Here I am again, training with Giles. He has some sort of fondless for the quarterstaff. I told
him it's a useless weapon, but does he listen?
Kennedy and Giles both have pads on and both are wielding a quarterstaff. They take a bow.
GILES
Now let's see how much you've improved...... en guarde!
They softly tap each other's staff as a sign to begin.
Giles takes a defensive stance, waiting for Kennedy to attack. Kennedy attacks with five consecutive blows but Giles
blocks all the attacks. Giles then moves back, waiting for Kennedy to attack again. As Kennedy steps forward to attack
again, Giles suddenly moves forward with a quick pace. He holds his staff horizontal to block Kennedy's attack. Giles
then takes a couple of more steps forward. Kennedy tries to move backwards but can't keep up, so Giles effectively pushes
her on the floor.
GILES *smiles*
Come on. This is no time for a rest. You haven't even been hit..... yet
An expression of indignancy appears on Kennedy's face. She immediately shrugs it off and gets up again. They assume
the same starting position as before.
GILES *smiles*
Ready?.... En guarde!
There is the tapping of the staff again as a sign to begin. Giles takes the same stance as before, waiting for Kennedy
to attack. Kennedy doesn't wait a second. She starts to attack again and again. Giles manages to block Kennedy's
attacks again. We can see Kennedy is getting tired of the attacking. She stops attacking and moves back for a second.
KENNEDY *gasping for air*
Damn! You're not supposed to get better at this
GILES *casual*
Well, sorry to dissapoint you
This time, Giles attacks. But Kennedy is ready for him and blocks the attacks.
KENNEDY *talking fast*
Look! Over there.
Kennedy points at the exit. Giles turns around to look at the exit and immediately, Kennedy sweeps the staff over
the floor, causing Giles to falls down.
KENNEDY *laughing out loud*
Oh my god! I can't believe you fell for that one.
GILES *serious*
Crazy me. But I don't think a demon would fall for that, so it's a pretty useless strategy
KENNEDY
Who said it was a strategy?
GILES
Right. Let's move on to the crossbow.
Camera shifts to the front of the Magic Box. We hear glass break.
KENNEDY *from the back*
Sorry
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Like I said, not good with the crossbow

We now see Andrew and Dawn walking over the sidewalk. It's dark outside.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
While I am painfully basy with all the training, other people of the gang are mostly busy with
other stuff. Like Dawn and Andrew.... they're probably dating right now.
You know, it's not fair. They're fighting right there with me... they should be training too...
Dawn and Andrew now arrive at the Summers' home.
DAWN
I really had a lot of fun.
ANDREW
So did I. Too bad we have to patrol now.
DAWN
You know, I can just call Willow and tell them we can't make it. It's not like Willow can't kill
things on her own.
KENNEDY (voiceover)
Sometimes I feel that they're not as devoted as I am
ANDREW
Then let's do that. Willow and Giles are at the Magic Box?
DAWN
Of course. Where else would they be?
Dawn opens the door and she and Andrew step inside. Hearing them, Willow comes walking out of the living room.
WILLOW
Good, you're here. I've been waiting for you two. Let's pick up Kennedy and Giles and patrol.
Willow walks back into the living room to get some weapons.
ANDREW *to Dawn*
We're not getting away with it, are we?
DAWN
Guess not. But look at the upside.
ANDREW
What upside?
DAWN
Well, I'm not exactly sure, but there's always an upside.
ANDREW
Good to know. I'm gonna get some weapons.
DAWN
Good idea
Andrew and Dawn walk to the living room.

The entire gang has gathered at the Bronze. Xander and Giles are sitting at a table while Dawn is dancing with Andrew
and Willow is dancing with Kennedy. Xander looks at them for a second and then turns to Giles.
XANDER
We need more girls in the party, Giles
Giles almost chokes in his drink.
GILES
More girls?!
Xander smiles at Giles. Giles now gets what Xander means and smiles back.
XANDER
Funny. This place always gives me a feeling of home.
GILES
Well I can honestly say, that is not so for me
Xander looks at Andrew and Dawn dancing. There is another teen couple dancing next to them.
Suddenly, the other couple stops dancing. Then, the boy pushes the girl away, just before his skin starts burning.
The fire is not a normal fire color, it is redder. His skin burns everywhere at once and it takes only a few seconds
before he is dead. He falls down on the floor. Then, as fast as it began, the fire stops.
The entire Bronze looks at the boy, shocked. The girls starts crying. Then suddenly, the girls looks around, clearly
scared. The girl also starts burning with the same fire. Within a few seconds, the girl is also dead.
The crowd is still standing around them, looking confused, disgusted and scared.
Everyone doesn't know how fast to get out of there. There's a rush for the door. Within the two minutes, the entire
Bronze is empty except for Xander, Giles, Andrew, Dawn, Kennedy and Willow.
DAWN
That was not normal, was it?
WILLOW
No, setting people on fire really isn't
DAWN
It wasn't normal fire, was it? It looked different
WILLOW
I think it was a spell
KENNEDY
Great, another witch gone crazy. We haven't had one of those in days.
Willow looks up, looking like she just realized something.

In a small house, Kate is watching TV. She can see the front door from where she's sitting and she sees the door
opening and the gang stepping inside. Kate seems far from pleased to see them and turns the TV off.
KATE
What the hell are you doing here? Kill me if you want, otherwise, get out!
DAWN
Not yet. We have a little experiment.
Dawn takes a small vial out of her pocket, opens it and walks towards Kate.
DAWN *cold*
Hold out your arm
KATE *annoyed*
Are you retarded *and* deaf? I told you all to get out.
DAWN *cold*
Fine, have it your way.
She throws the contents of the vial in Kate's face. It looks like water, while dripping off her face.
Kate looks at Dawn and if looks could kill, Dawn would be six feet under by now.
KATE *angry*
What... the hell... was that for?
Dawn looks back at Willow with a dissapointed look on her face.
DAWN
It's not her. Her skin didn't turn blue.
Dawn steps away from Kate.
KATE
You wanted to know if I did a spell? Are you crazy? You know I can't.
WILLOW
You're right. I've researched that spell. Your magic power is not gone, it is blocked by a
permanent spell.
KATE
Yes, and if I had any magic left, I would disspell it, but I don't.
Kate looks at Dawn and smiles.
KATE
You hoped it was me, right? You'd have an excuse to kill me.
WILLOW
You know, we examined the bodies and they both had a mark on their forehead. It was burned in
even more than the rest so it was still recognizable. Maybe you know what it means.
Willow grabs a piece of paper from her pocket and shows it to Kate. It shows a circle embedded in a triangle. Within
the triangle is a horizontal sword with two stars above it.
Kate slightly smiles.
KATE *smiles*
Never seen it before.... sorry
DAWN
Nonsense! You know what it means. Tell us.
WILLOW
We don't have to be enemies, you know. You could help us.
Kate starts to laugh out loud.
KATE *while laughing*
You came here to ask me for help, didn't you?
GILES
Yes we did
KATE *helpfull*
Well, why didn't you just say so?
WILLOW
So you'll help us?
KATE
No
ANDREW
Why not?
KATE
Because I don't like you all
XANDER
You never wondered what it's like to be a good guy?
KATE
No, because I *was* a good guy.... girl. I didn't like it.
XANDER
That doesn't mean it's always bad to be a good guy...... or girl.
Kate walks closer to Xander and looks him in the eyes.
KATE
Still not helping
Kate walks back to her chair and turns the TV back on.
KATE
Why are you all still here?
Willow, Dawn, Kennedy, Andrew and Giles walk outside. Xander motions them that he's gonna give it a last try.
The front door slams shut and Xander walks over to Kate.
KATE
You know, I'd invite you in but well.... you're already in.
Xander just looks at Kate, not saying a word.
KATE
Lost your tongue?
XANDER
No, I was just wondering why you don't like us
KATE
There is the whole thing about me being evil.
Xander laughs out loud.
XANDER
You're kidding aren't you? You have a soul. That means you can be good.
KATE
It's too late for that
XANDER
What happened to "I didn't like the whole good-guy thing"?
Kate looks at Xander for a moment. Xander then starts walking back to the front door.
XANDER
You know, it's not too late. People make mistakes... they learn and try not to let it happen again.
Kate looks a little disturbed. Xander obviously got through to her a little.
KATE
Please... go away
Xander reaches the front door and grabs the doorhandle.
XANDER
You know, that sounds a lot better than "get out". We can build on that.
Xander opens the front door and looks back at Kate, who is looking down. Xander smiles.
KATE
Bisshop. His name's Bisshop.
XANDER
Thank you.
KATE
Don't mention it.... really don't..... In fact, I'm only mentioning it because I don't like him and
I hope you kill him.
XANDER *smiles*
Fine. I won't mention it.... but I still say thanks...... You know, if you ever need to talk....
Kate looks at him with a We-did-this-a-few-minutes-ago-look.
XANDER
Well, the offer still stands.
Xander then walks through the door and closes it behind him.
Outside, Xander walks towards the rest of the gang, that are waiting on the other side of the street.
WILLOW
And?
XANDER
Bisshop. She said the guys name is Bisshop.
DAWN
How did you get her to say that?
KENNEDY
Did you torture her or something?
XANDER
I asked. Come on.
They all walk away.

The gang gathers at the Magic Box.
GILES
Alright, we need to find out more about the Bisshop person.
DAWN
I can try the net
GILES
The rest of us can hit the books
WILLOW
And then comes the part about us finding him
ANDREW
Can't you just use a locator spell?
WILLOW
I can't find something if I don't know what I'm looking for. We've never met.
KENNEDY
And let's not skip the possibility that this whole Bisshop thing is a wrong lead.
XANDER
I think it's the truth
KENNEDY
Oh really? You know, I don't set any value on the words of that bitch.
XANDER
Let's not lose our perspective here
KENNEDY
I'm perspective-gal here. She's a killer. You can't just take her words for granted.
XANDER
Why not? I think she can change. She wants to change.
KENNEDY
Is that what you know, or what you want? Because when I look at her I see a restrained murderer who
is just waiting for a chance to strike back.
XANDER
She has a soul.... so she can be good
KENNEDY
She tried to kill Willow.... twice. She's a nothing but a cold-blooded killer.
XANDER
She needs a chance.
KENNEDY
No, what she needs is to rot in jail
WILLOW
I think she deserves a chance. She's a human.... she can be good.
KENNEDY
Whatever. But I'm reserving a big I-told-you-so here if she tries to doublecross us.
GILES
Meanwhile, we can use our time more usefull
Giles points at the books and without any more comments the gang goes to research.
Half an hour later, the gang had found the information they needed. Dawn shows the gang the information on the screen of
the laptop.
GILES
He's a demon?
Dawn lectures as she reads the screen.
DAWN
Yes, but he goes disguised as a human. He has strong magical powers. And well.... the usual yada
yada yada.
WILLOW
How do we kill it?
DAWN
It doesn't say.... so I guess the basic killing
WILLOW
Now there's still the part about finding him. Like I said, I don't know it.
DAWN
What about a standard demon-locator spell?
WILLOW
But there are so many demons in Sunnydale
GILES
Look for a powerful one who is alone. Maybe we'll get lucky.
DAWN
Cool! I'll get the stuff we need.
She stands up and quickly walks to the other side of the Magic Box to get the supplies they need.

Willow and Dawn are busy with the demon-locator spell. They are looking at the map with a confused face.
WILLOW
Isn't that.... ?
DAWN
Yes it is.
KENNEDY
That's Kate's house.
XANDER
That doesn't say anything
KENNEDY
Keep dreaming Xander
The gang grabs weapons and heads out. Giles and Xander both carry a large battle axe. Dawn grabs a crossbow.
Andrew also grabs a crossbow. Kennedy goes to the back of the Magic Box and comes back with the runic sword
she got for her birthday.

The entire gang is walking on the sidewalk towards Kate's place. They are all fully armed.
While they talk, they keep walking.
DAWN
So.... what are we going to do?
WILLOW
I don't know
DAWN
Well... maybe we should *know* first.
KENNEDY
Giles?
GILES
Let's talk to her first. Maybe there's an explanation for all this
They arrive at Kate's house. Willow enters first. She sees something she absolutely didn't expect. A tall
human-looking creature is beating up a helpless Kate. The man has obviously been busy for awhile because
Kate's entire body and face is full with cuts and bruises. Her clothes are slightly burnt.
The human-looking creature immediately notices Willow when she comes in.
WILLOW
Bisshop, I presume?
All the other come in after Willow.
BISSHOP *to Willow*
And you brought more victims. That's considerate.
KENNEDY
I'm sure you have a reason for beating her up, but what did those people at the Bronze do?
BISSHOP
Do? You're a funny girl.
WILLOW
You just did it for fun.
BISSHOP
I guess you got me there. Takes one to know one I suppose.
WILLOW
I don't enjoy killing. I never did.
BISSHOP
Right. Keep repeating that and maybe someday you'll believe it.
Bisshop points his hands at Willow. He mumbles a few words and a bright massive bolt shoots towards Willow.
Willow waves her right hand from left to right and the bolt diverts to the right.
BISSHOP *smiles*
Damn! You're good.
Bisshop walks towards Willow but then, Dawn and Andrew both fire their crossbows. Bisshop tries to evade the bolts.
He is not completely successful however. Dawn's bolt hits him in the shoulder. Andrew's bolt flies more than two inches
left from the demon's head. While Bisshop is distracted for a second, Kennedy and Giles both attack.
The demon has no problems with them however. He dodges their blows and hits them both back.
WILLOW
Speculum effigia
A very bright light fills the room, blinding everyone. When everyone can see again, they all look in awe.
Bisshop looks at Willow and sees two Willow's standing there. They look exactly identical.
Bisshop rushes for the left Willow, jumping right at her. He jumps right through this Willow however.
He hits the wall with his head, but it doesn't seem to hurt him.
BISSHOP
It's an illusion.
KENNEDY
Well, this isn't
Kennedy, Xander and Giles storm towards Bisshop again, waving their weapons. Meanwhile, Andrew and Dawn are reloading
their crossbows. Bisshop hits Xander and pushem him back right into Willow. Their both fall down on the floor.
Giles doesn't get more lucky. He gets a few punches in the face and goes down. Dawn and Andrew fire again, but
the demon catches Dawn's arrow. Andrew's arrow hits Kennedy in the arm.
KENNEDY
Ooow! Watch it!
Writhing in pain, she pulls out the arrow, and immediately falls down on the floor.
ANDREW
Sorry.
Xander and Willow have gotten up and get ready for battle. Bisshop bends over Kennedy to finish her but Willow
telepatically pushes him back. Kate lifts her head up. She can barely speak.
KATE *in pain*
Fire...... fire......
Willow looks at Kate.
WILLOW *to Kate*
I can do that
WILLOW *shouts*
Everyone, get back!
Xander, Giles and Kennedy immediately move away from Bisshop. Dawn and Andrew were already far away from Bisshop.
She turns back at Bisshop with a wicked smile on her face.
WILLOW
Accendo iaculator
Willow points her hands at Bisshop and a stream of fire flows to Bisshop like a magical flamethrower.
Bisshop gets hit and starts to burn. After about ten seconds, Willow stops. Bisshop is on the floor.
KENNEDY
Is he dead?
WILLOW
I think so
Kennedy grabs her sword and jams it through Bisshop's chest. Bisshop doesn't move.
KENNEDY
Yeah. He's probably dead.
Xander moves towards Kate to check on her wounds.
KATE
I'm alright. Nothing that won't heal.
XANDER
Guessing he didn't like you either
KATE *sarcastic*
How'd you guess?
XANDER
Great! More sarcasm. That's just what we need.
KATE
Whatever. You did what you came here for.... now leave.
XANDER *not angry*
If that's what you want.
Xander walks towards the front door and he and the rest of the gang leaves.

It is day. Kate is looking out of her window with a sad look.
KENNEDY *voiceover*
So I was wrong. She wasn't allied with that Bisshop. Still, that doesn't make me trust her.
KENNEDY *voiceover*
But still, I'm starting to see what Xander means..... maybe she *can* change.
KENNEDY *voiceover* *happy voice*
Today, I learned that Andrew is even worse with the crossbow than me. The doctor said it my arm has
to rest for at least two weeks... go figure. I think Giles has given Andrew a crossbow-restraining
order.
Kate's expression changes a little. A small smile appears on her face.
KENNEDY *voiceover* *serious again*
I guess we bring out the best in people. Today I learned that things aren't always the way they
appear.... I have to remember that.
