The Five Percenters
Many would call them a street gang, or a prison group, or just plain thugs, but The 5 Percenters are trying to portray something quite more than that. The are commonly referred to as the 5 Percenters, but also known as "the poor righteous teachers". Their history is brief yet detailed, their beliefs are quite different from what most people believe, and the people that are apart of this will alarm you. In no way I'm I advertising this as a new form of religion to be persuaded into. I do not agree with their views, but I do find them very interesting. First we will start with the history of the 5 Percenters. This particular movement, like the Nation of Islam, derives its teaching from Islam. The 5 Percenters and the Nation of Islam derive their teachings from Islamic beliefs, but they do not practice them as traditionally as the Islamic do. The 5 Percenters were started in 1964 by Clarence Jowers Smith, a youth minister with the Nation of Islam's Mosque No. 7 run by Malcolm X. He left the Nation of Islam with the intent of spreading his beliefs throughout Harlem, which is now the center of the 5 Percenters. He changed his name to Allah, and began his teachings. Unfortunately he was assassinated in 1969, in a Harlem basement, but his legacy and teachings still leaves on today. Although their teachings are derived from Islam's, they follow a very non-traditional way of life. They believe that the black man is god, and the black woman is earth. They also believe that the black man was the first human creation, and that the white man was made from the black man. The white man then in turn tricked the black man into slavery. The true basis of their beliefs is called the Supreme Mathematics. Which means that there is the whole population represented by 100%. 85% of the population does not know the truth, 15% know the truth, but 10% uses that truth for purposes of evil and keeping the 85% in the dark. Then there are the 5% that know the truth and tries to teach the 85% of the population. These are the "poor righteous teachers. The 10% have been referred to as the devil by the 5 percenters. They have also been refereed to as most religious leaders, such as the Pope. They center their beliefs on the family, and peace. Although they seem to have good intentions, they are often viewed as a gang. Detective Louis Jordan (an ex-gang member, now a gang expert) says that there about 400 real Five Percenters, and a gang of about 60. Detective Louis Jordan calls the gang of 60 the "jive percenters". They use the Five Percenters for negative purposes. The real Five Percent believe that God is in all of them. They do not believe that there is a God in heaven that is watching over us. Rather they are Gods, and that they should pray to themselves, not anyone else. They are in control of their own fate and decide their future.
The Five Percenters has had a lot of negative publicity since its inception. Largely because the mass media views them as a gang. Which they claim they are not. An FBI report is now available on the internet that classifies them as a gang, and goes on to name a number of events that they say are gang related (http://foia.fbi.gov/5percent.htm). The Five Percenters are all black, but they do not discriminate on other races, but only blacks can be Gods and Earth's. Thus, other nationalities can only observe rather than participate to the full extent. Some of the people that are well known that participate in the Five Percenters will alarm you. Triple Platinum artist, Erykah Badu, sings about the Five Percenters in almost every song. In her popular song, On and On, Erykah Badu sings, "If we were made in his image then call us by our names, Most intellects do not believe in god but they fear us just the same," She continues, "I was born under water with 3 dollars and 6 dimes Yeah you might laugh 'cause you did not do your math," She is reffering to some of their mathematical belifs mentioned earlier. In a Nas song called "Life's A Bitch" AZ exclaims, "cause yeah, we were beginners in the hood as five percenters, But something must of got in us cause all of us turned to sinners". Other famous acts that preach the message of the Five Percenters are the Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, and more. That surprises me because we are digesting messages that we have no idea about. People sing their lyrics, listen to there message, and have absolutely no idea what they are hearing. The Five Percenters have unique ideas, and an even more unique history. Their plans for the future of their movement in unknown, and the way they go about doing it is already angering many people. The people that associate with them that are in the limelight and help spread the message are common names in urban and suburban homes. Their messages come across our television and we don't even know it. If this movement interests you I suggest researching it thoroughly, but I have found that most information is biased. They haven't persuaded me to ditch my religion, but they have done so with a lot of people, and they are forcing their way into the black community.

Anyone interested in attending a double Canarsie HS/South Shore HS reunion?
The idea is to make it a jumbo reunion for the ultra good-looking and cool classes of 1982 - 1986, as we all have extremely busy lives. Plus, our neighborhood didn't promote the best school spirit, so this way we can guarantee at least 200 - 300 people attending.
Tables can be set up according to HS & graduating year.

If the response rate is decent, I'll seriously start planning this for either January, 2005, or July, 2005.
