Remembering the Siege of Baler: A Tribute to Spanish Gallantry and Filipino Magnanimity
By Augusto de Viana
The Sleepy town of Baler in the eastern coast of Luzon became Spain’s last outpost in Luzon in 1899. A detachment of around 50 Spanish soldiers stubbornly held out for more than eleven months defying terrible odds, from Filipino bullets, boredom and diseases, refusing to believe in Spain’s loss of the Philippines. The gallant stand of this isolated group prompted General Emilio Aguinaldo to issue a decree calling the surviving defenders of the garrison led by their commander Lt. Saturnino Martin Cerezo “ not as prisoners of war, but as friends.”
