**************FANTASMA************

This is a must see film, it is a very satirical & disturbing film that is unique & wierd.

Nakakaloka ang mga washroom scene dito, with complete close up shot for 2 minutes na walang puknat na susuhan with matching close -up ng pagkaganda ganda , pakahaba haba at matabang nostalgia ng Lead actor na si Ricardo Meneses.

This teen-ager has the most sexiest body & nostalgic (NOTA) I have ever seen.

It is a highly acclaimmed Brazilian or Portuguese film ? with matching subtitles in English.

It is a story of male voyeaurism with its hot fantasies & weird fetishes. It a must see film for gays but not for homophobic. Due some scenes here aver very disturbing & some consensual sex between straights & gays.

The lead actor Ricardo Meneses is such a stunning georgeousr actor that I have a hard time finding a photo of him, I think he only did one movie of his time & that is it.

I would suggest to everybody if they could find a photo of this Beautiful Brazilian actor. If I am not mistaken he could either be Brazilin or Portueguse, to please post it here for our housemember to be the sole judge.

He is not really that guapo-guapo actor in technical terms, but Dioskoday ang lakas ng arrived niya (dating tangah)

I beleived the film is available on DVD, but not sos ure sa VHS, but I think it is about 75% na sa VHS film ito.

Here are some of the Movie Comments & reviews

Date: 2 January 2003
Summary: A cruel reality resulted from loneliness and desire

`O Fantasma' is definitely a disturbing movie. After seeing it, surely you will leave the movie theater thoughtful, impressed and full of pessimism. A movie that makes you think about loneliness in the big urban areas. A story that may be happening outside your house, while you live a comfortable life inside. It is a lonely world that belongs to the night, to the shadows, making part of the underground of the big cities. Once belonging to this world, it seems that its habitants are deteriorated into indigent human beings, who lose their names, homes and origins.

The movie tells the story of Sergio who works at night as a garbage collector on a big city. He lives alone with his dog - and that introduces you into a universe where man and animal live under merged boundary conditions. Sergio is a lonely guy. Homosexual, he keeps himself away from a female job colleague who is always flirting with him. He has no lover, family or friends. But he seems to be always in the company of an enormous desire, which will conflict with his own loneliness.

Loneliness and desire summarise Sergio's reality and push him into a primitive world, where man becomes animal. The protagonist tries to consume his strong sexual desire through anonymous, casual and wild sex. Thus, it is on the dark corners, public toilets and other filthy places where Sergio tries to satisfy his sexual impulse. But the promiscuity of those moments does not appear to satisfy him, since his desire leads him to the figure of an attractive swimmer guy. A guy who lives in one of the districts that Sergio runs into his night shifts, during his journey of work and garbage. That hard and solitary reality makes desire becomes obsession. Apparently, a single motivation only exists: search the young guy, peeping, observing him from distance and getting touch with an opposite environment.

Summary: Masterpiece of Alternate-Sexuality om FilmO Fantasma is a much more complex coming of age tale of a gay garbage collector desperately in seek of a master but at the same time keeping somewhat normal relationships with a fellow-woman garbage collector co-worker and a not quite so normal relationship with his Dobberman

Absolute Must-see except for bigots of all shades.

Summary: Reduced to nothing...

Some of the finest European filmakers from Godard to Kieslowski

to Haneke have all understood the art of reductionism. That is

through a process of editing and re-editing their screenplays and

actual films these men have been able creature a 'pure' cinematic

expereince. However this cannot be at the expense of either

character or sense. This is where O Fantasma goes wrong.

There is no motivation or explanation of the main characters

feelings or actions. We are asked to just accept the way he is. Yet

we are all products of circumstance.

By combining hard core porn in the film we are further alienated.

When Haneke did this in la Pianiste, it was a character who

watched the porn. Here the actors are the porn stars, but the sex is

episodic and not actually necessary or fierce as I believe it was

intended to be.

To say that the central character is meant to be mysterious is fine.

But he is not that well defined. In the end he is just non-descript

and ultimatly not worth the effort. As the film is about this character,

it too ultimately becomes flat and worthless

Zen Bones

Date: 3 March 2003
Summary: Where is the Mystery Science Theater when you need it?

You know when a movie about a garbage man depicts his sex life to be as boring as his work life, that film is in a lot of trouble! What we have here are 90 minutes of the most excruciatingly tedious drivel ever to appear on a movie screen. The entire film is cloaked in darkness, but not 'noirish' darkness, or menacing darkness, or erotic darkness, or clandestine darkness, or saturnine darkness, or melancholic darkness. It's just... dark, as in dim. Dull. The director was supposedly trying to set up a natural look since obviously, if you're going to shoot most of the scenes at night in locations where there are minimal light sources, yes... it's going to be dark. To impose even more 'naturalism' on the audience, there is rarely more than one camera set-up in each scene, so we can feel like we are voyeurs. Someone ought to tell Senior Rodrigues that has been done. Many times. And really, the film isn't natural. It goes for art (or should I say artifice) by turning our 'hero' into a phantom (fantasma) who crouches and stalks and eventually becomes a surreal vinyl creature from the black lagoon. It doesn't look sexy, menacing or scary. Just hysterically silly. And so it goes for most of the sex scenes. One never gets the sense that they are smelling, hearing or feeling the eroticism of sex, be it encased in vinyl, leather, or just the heat and sweat of human flesh. HOW CAN ANY FILM POSSIBLY MAKE SEX SEEM SO BORING????? The sound of one leather daddy walking down the street in "Cruising" is far sexier than every sex scene in this film put together, and I don't even like "Cruising" (okay, except for all the hot guys!)! If you want to see some hot sex, I can guarantee you, altogether there is really less than ten minutes of it in the entire film, and barely four minutes of it are actually visible. If you want to see an artistic film about the animalistic nature of sex, fetishism, or an alienated and obsessed gay (bi) person, stick with "Taxi Zum Klo", "Frisk" or Savage Nights". The latter two of those I also didn't like, but they seem brilliant in the light, er.. dark of this film. Even Hollywood makes better films about sexual obsession, fetishism and animalistic symbolism. And think of it, when it comes to honest depictions of eroticism, how much lower can one's standards go than a Hollywood movie?

Seriously, as a true cinephile, I hate having to give such an overtly negative review of an independent film. It really gives me no pleasure. But I'm sick and tired of gutless, pretentious films about sexual obsession that cloak themselves in art school naturalism rather than honest naturalism. What are these directors so afraid of? Given the reaction of those in the theater where I saw this film (those who didn't walk out!), I do have to say that if this film is ever released on DVD, I only hope it includes commentary by the Mystery Science Theater group. With the right amusing banter (or perhaps overlaying some of the dialogue from "Creature from the Black Lagoon" on to this film), this film actually works pretty well as a comedy!

Apparently, a single motivation only exists: search the young guy, peeping, observing him from distance and getting touch with an opposite environment.

But Sergio seems to be conducted to an unavoidable end: a curious reversal process of the Human evolution. From human being, he seems to revert through a trail that takes him to some animal condition. As if loneliness and desire would lead to the most primitive stage of mankind. The anti-evolution process transforms him in an irrational creature: he eats, drinks, urinates and evacuates as an animal. It is when Sergio abandons his man's part and, protected by black latex clothes, ruptures with the present and starts roaming on an urban world like an animal guided by his instincts only.

A frightening scenario, result from a contemporaneous reality - at same time empty, isolated and cruel. And that victimized Sergio.

Summary: Porno fits right in this serious film

Obsession pursues its quarry on a featureless plain. The sex is hardcore. Meneses is gorgeous. A restless young man who takes his quick pleasures, active and passive, with other men in dark alleys, toilets, wherever. Then he comes across the one guy he needs and can't be complete without.

Porno finds its place in serious film.

Summary: Dull and directionless

O Fantasma is one of those tedious works that invariably draws words like "subversive" from the mouths of the adoring. Rodrigues postulates that the entire night-shift of Lisbon's garbage collection is staffed by aspiring gay porn stars, who have lots of time to do interesting side-work like tearing open bags of garbage with their teeth and peeping into other people's windows. There are lots of "edgy" shots of genitals, and lots of "cinematic" scenes of voyeurism. Sometimes we get to watch the main character float on his back in a pool, genitals blazing forth, for at least five minutes. Sometimes (actually many times) we get to watch him stare into the same living room window, with a Versace-stern glare clearly meant to imply something tremendous. Finally, we get to see him prance around half the city at night in a black rubber fetish-suit. And of course there's lots of brief anonymous sex, just in case the director's intent wasn't already clear. In the end, our hero defecates on the floor of a machine-shop (but not until after slo-o-o-wly unzipping the back side of his rubber outfit and wagging it all for the camera) then runs out the back door, and the credits roll. Boring.

Summary: Masterpiece of Alternate-Sexuality om Film

Sadly (but not too sadly) I only got to see this film on DVD - the transcription was OK (3.5/5) and so was the sound (=). I liked the extra Bonus of the director's first short: "Parabéns"

O Fantasma is a much more complex coming of age tale of a gay garbage collector desperately in seek of a master but at the same time keeping somewhat normal relationships with a fellow-woman garbage collector co-worker and a not quite so normal relationship with his Dobberman

Summary: "Quench your thirst!"

After I saw this movie here in Lisbon, I walked down the street (actually, this street appears in the movie), from the theater to the subway. It was nighttime. "QUENCH YOUR THIRST!" was scribbled in black graffiti in one of the walls of the station. This is a masterpiece.

San Francisco

Date: 19 September 2001
Summary: Sublime!

I can't stop thinking about this movie. It was the best film I saw this year! It is a film about being alone, and one man's navigation through that desperate state of being. He is able to moderately handle his condition by having random sex with men he meets on his nightly haunts through Lisboa, and the company he keeps with the local dog. Then his world is turned upside down when he meets a man that is the embodiment of all his obsessions, hopes, dreams, and fears. He realizes that no one can live without love and we watch helplessly as he descends into a painful and dark retreat further into himself, taking his victims with him.

Lisbon

Date: 27 October 2000
Summary: A shocker! worth seeing if you can handle it!

Well, it is hard to describe this movie. It shocked the Venice Festival and right doing so! We are asked by this film where the boundaries of the male sexuality are. Can we live without love? not even dogs do it! Please be aware of the explicit sex and the bondage scenes! hey, enjoy it at least as much as I did
