The SAPolice Services run a Dog Breeding Unit outside Pretoria.I heard about the reseach done by the present Director, Dr Johannes Slabber who has done his PhD on Methods to successfully select GSD at an early age to be trained for the Police. Under the old system they selected candidates at approx. 19months and had a success rate of 30%. With his methods they now do selection at 9 months and end with a success rate of 70%. Quite an achievement in time, manpower and cost saving. GSD are still the major component of policing dogs.We had interesting discussions on the implications of his work for the Boerboels.

About the breed you refer to namely the Bloodhound cross Rotweiler/Doberman the situation is: They discontinued the development of a new breed because of the time consuming process(7 generations) and the added responsibility of dog shows which they obviously were not geared for.
The tracking and training ability of the first generation cross Bloodhound x Dobermann were so outstanding that they
now concentrate on this. The success rate with these first cross dogs is 90%. They are only interested in the tracking, training and agility capabilities of these animals and select for medium size. The crossess are not used in further breeding.
This is about it.If you require more info contact Dr Slabber at E-mail: DogSchool-Roodeplaat@SAPS.org.za
