Dan,
You do like to stir, but this is a valid point that many do not want to discuss or have answered. The fact that some crossbreeding has occurred is talked about by many, is much more than highly likely, and is considered all too obvious to some of us. I understand why some of these breedings have occurred, and I understand that in a dog not recognized by any official registry or club that breeders might use whatever, or any breed of dog that was both capable and locally available to further his personal ambitions in a breeding program. What I may not understand completely is why some would like to deny the preponderance of evidence suggesting that other breeds have both polluted, and contributed to the Boerboel gene pool. The differing types of Boerboels present today are not likely the product of selective breeding for differing breeders’ needs…they more likely show differing contributing/polluting breeds’ influence. Bull Dog, Dane, MODERN MASTIFF, not the Mastiff of old. Why would we not want to talk about this? Remember that it is a disqualification to show evidence of another breed at appraisal. Could that be the problem??

I have a fine collection of old photos sent to me from several African breeders. People like Mr. Lucas Van de Merwe who was there from the start of the search. Also from Mr. John Penders, who has studied and traced the Boerboels history much longer than I have. These old Photos show a superbly fit and capable farm-dog…that’s where they found them…and a dog of a type obviously breeding true in respect to capabilities and suitability for use…regardless of lacking a long written pedigree. Then there is my old favorite Boerboel saying...form follows function...the Boerboel could not, would not have survived if he did not offer value to the farmer, and a Boerboel constructed physically or temperamentally unsuited to add value to the daily life of the farmer would not have been fed. This nonsense about the "Rural Boerboel" being unfit for modern life and needing to be changed to the "Urban Boerboel" is just hog-wash carried by people with Boerboels that cannot live up to the more stringent demands of the original type because of the influence and degradation of other breeds.

And now for your more important question, and the one likely to generate the most traffic…I say name him Muffin…but as always, JMO

DKH
