Subject: Todays Boerboel, yesterdays crossbreed?

Is todays BB even similar to the "boel" of 100 yrs. ago?

Or is it nothing more than a sly marketing ploy (the fierce lion dog from South Africa) by a select few?

How far back can a mastiff type dog with that characteristic muzzle & stop (that helps distinguish it from a BM) be traced?

Was this a breed developed 20 or so yrs ago? Maybe a BM x RB ?


I've been noticing something and I would like to see if anyone knows of or has any old pictures of BB's from the past. With all of this recent talk about the historical BB, I'm curious to see what this dog looked like years ago. The pictures that I have seen, don't look much like todays BB and in fact a couple look like some other breed altogether. Pictures from 30-50 yrs ago should be available and even of the foundation stock of when the SABT was formed and just prior to this. You would think that some pictorial record keeping was done by the originators and that some of these pictures would look like todays Boerboel.


And for those of you wondering, yes I like to stir. SO WHAT? What would you rather have me ask? Maybe I should ask, "what should I name my puppy? Fluffy or muffin?" :)
