Subject: 2 Web sites of extreme importance

www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/dogs/
www.fhcrc.org/science/dog_genome/
The most important thing on the first site is tha nova show "Dogs and more Dogs" which aired last month. You can take the time to read the transcript, ALL of it, or order the show on DVD or VHS. I did both and it is my best investment of late. It contains brand new 2004 info on all aspects of current research. It does not agree with much of what has been posted on this board and will undoubtedly open another can of worms, but it sure does explain in everyday language the problems we are having and have had and continue to have with breeding the healthy and historic Boerboel. I feel I understand the why's of what is happening better, but not a bit better of the how to fix them, and I have very little faith that any of the programs, new or old that have been discussed will make much difference, as they have not for the last 30 to 50 years. SORRY to be negative, But it has made me extremely sad, and continues to do so.
The 2nd. site is about the biggest and most involved project to research the genome of dogs and involves several institutions and organizations. It has a lot of information if you will take the time to follow the many different threads. Much of what we all think and believe about dogs is proving to be wrong, but hopefully some of you will find some positive and helpful info to bring into everyday Breeding practice. I am also fairly concerned that these types of projects are not being done for the dogs, but because they help in the modeling of Human problems. But Hey I am an old Hippie with stars still in my eyes and whatever gets the projects funded is most important, RIGHT? I just have to voice one personal opinion on the DNA research that I disagree with, and that is the statement that a lot of the DNA molecule contains so called junk dna. I think that is very close to shooting the old foot slam off, but again, who am I to say? I am not starting back on posting or even reading the boards regularly again. I still want to be invisible, but I wanted to give you all this information, and I hope someone finds it helpful. Still All of Your Friend, Ed
