I have talked with breeders that have waiting lists for pups. In informed buyer needs to ask many questions - one of which being "how long is your waiting list". Believe it or not, many people will still put down a deposit for a year or more in advance. That is NOT the breeder's fault, and it should not be the breeder's problem. The buyer chose to do this.

Having the non-refundable deposit does cut down on the number of people caught up in the heat of the moment.

It's called "Good Faith".

I would be pi$$ed if someone wanted a deposit back just because they came across a board posting for another litter. All because it was available when they wanted it. Should have done a little more research and shopping around.

But, things do change. Sudden job transfer, military involvement, new family memers in the home, death in the family... If the situation warrants a good reason and you are still down the list, then yes - refundable. (But minus a nominal fee is even acceptable. The whole worid charges a paperwork fee.)

How many postings have you seen for younger dogs (not even 2 years old) that are up for sale or "to good home", or in rescue or the pound because they consider a dog as disposable? Their main objective was "getting a puppy NOW". Not considering life changes down the line.

If you put a couple hundred dollars down, it gives a hint that you may have thought things through. A non-refundable deposit should make one stop and think. Often times it does not.
