Dan G,

I am afraid maybe I misread your original statement regarding breeding for the public for "pets". I apologise. I thought you were discussing breeding only for public pets. There are breeders which ONLY breed "pets", and have little or no regard for breeding improved offspring or whether or not the parents are even good examples of the breed.
I see now what you are just discussing the fact that we are creating "companions" period.

I could not agree more, and my personal feelings are that providing someone with a "family member/best friend" is a far greater responsibility than many take it, as I was trying to show in my previous post.

You asked what other reason to breed if not for pets. Well, there are many. Each breed in exsistance was bred with a purpose in mind, and most of them were not created to solely for the purpose of keeping our feet warm infront of the sofa (although many are great at it!lol). So there are many more things to consider aside from what a wonderful companion a pup will make. It is ALL of the characteristics together that make the total dog. Companion, Protector and Working Partner.

You asked:
"Have you ever bred dogs and charged money for pups?"

The answer to this would be yes. I was raised with my grandfather next door who trained and bred working retrievers. I continued the tradition of working/training and breeding into my adulthood with molosser breeds.

Again, I am sorry I misunderstood your use of the phrase :breeding "pets" for public sale, which may have caused much of the confusion and admittedly riled me up :o)

Cheryl
