Dan,

I so wanted to keep out of all of this, but this these lines got me.

"I never attempted to tell you what you need or that I know about farming or whatever it is you do. But if there is a new method of farming that requires for the farmer to have his own line of dogs, I would think that I would have heard about it. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it is a given that every farmer has to breed his own dogs to do his work and I just happened to miss that over the years."

Where I come from, those that own large land and use it do in fact breed their own dogs. They breed their own stock, so why not? You find a certain dog that has worked well. That dog will not live forever, and you need another trained and ready to step in if something "happens". And, if you have enough land, one dog at a time is not enough. So, you find a another dog to breed to, hoping you will find the next "Rover elite". And again, and again.

Say you are lucky, and find one out of every two or three litters that fits the bill. Kind of like a good horse. You can't keep all of the offspring, but you breed in hopes of getting that next barrel champion or race winner, or even the perfect starter horse for your kids or grandkids.

Oh, there are the cow dogs - different types for differnt jobs. There are the hunting dogs - bird dogs, hog dogs, retrievers. And each specialty has it's own division of jobs. It all depends on what jobs you have, and what you need done.

Maybe the problem is a difference in wording. What Dave says is a "farm" is actually a Ranch to many others.
