I don't want for others to misinterpret what I was saying in my previous post, so I would like to elaborate further. My desire to breed strictly as a hobby rather than a business is a PERSONAL preference, not a criticism to the other breeders who do charge for their pups. When I countered Jerry's response, like I've said a bunch of times already, it was playing devils advocate. This was another one of the points that I had a difficult time arguing with this lady.

This is my own stance on it.
I personally believe that a breeder that breeds as a business (charging for pups) can do it ethically as long as they are aware of the inherent dangers of relying on that money. I would personally prefer to steer clear of this problem, but that is not realistic for most breeders and if a talented breeder can provide a quality program while charging for their work, then I do believe that this could and does work as well. I have witnessed it personally and this is why I have drawn this conclusion.

How much is too much?

Once it is established as a business, then I believe that it is foolish to attempt to criticize them for being overpriced. I agree with Jerry that it is a free market and they will charge what they want to charge and the people will determine whether or not this is fair by choosing to buy the pups or not.
