here is my "experience" on people who use their years of experience and credentials as tools to make a point. A long time ago I served a four year apprenticeship in a place that employed approx. 40 something journeyman. There were poor ones, good ones and excellent ones.

The poor ones would always use their years of experience as tools to make a point on any subject and they would always talk down to the apprentices with comments such as "you don't have the feel" "it takes years", blah, blah, blah. I grew to not dislike this way of conduct but to despise it.

The good ones would make snide remarks at the most but hardly if ever used there yrs. of experience to make a point.

Now my mentor (Thank God) had 37 yrs. of experience and not once did he use it in a discussion or talk down to me or any other apprentice or journeyman that was under him. He was tough but never acted as mentioned before. This is the way that ALL of the job captains conducted themselves. And when I would go back to school, all of the other apprentices would reiterate what I was going through. I'm sure there must be BB owner tradespeople out there that can back up these experiences.

I picked up on this as a way of conducting yourself when you are considered a professional and it makes perfect sense. Why would I need to tell an apprentice that this is like this because I've been doing it for so long, instead of explaining the reason why it is how it is?

And a couple of years ago, one of the poor ones, a guy that couldn't read a drawing after 32 yrs. in the trade and a guy that used to make my life a living hell came to me asking me for a job. That was a sweet moment and a lesson that I'll never forget.

This is not to say that the same person with many years of experience will not gain more knowledge. That's obvious.
And in that sense, yes, experience plays a big part.

But to this day, I treat all of my guys with the same level of respect, and most of them have more yrs. of experience than I, one has more than twice as much. Does this mean that they know more or they are better? Would it even matter who is better or more knowledgable? There have been plenty of times that an apprentice brings up an idea that is different and that works well. But those with that false pride always try to shoot it down. This attitude only hurts the owner, and I have no tolerance for it. Especially on a forum.
