Subject: Paul Desmond's mpc?
各位:
請問有無用過MC Ggegory Hollywood Model A 4A 18 mpc
(即係Paul Desmond用果個Alto mpc呢)?在香港買到嗎,幾錢?如無,有無其他辦法買到,或有無其他mpc有類似效果?Thanks a lot!

I have a Gregory Master 6A 16 alto mouthpiece in near mint condition. I bought it from a collector in USA for over US$350. Very nice tone when I use it with Vandoren Java 2.5 reed and a BG metal ligature. Recently, I bought a Gregory Model-A alto mouthpiece (same model used by Paul Desmond) but mine has a 5 tip opening and larger chamber 20. Model-A sounds very much like my Master, but the former is a bit darker and slightly more easy to blow.
I have played vintage Selmer soloist style and modern Meyer mouthpieces (both are hard rubber). I have to say Gregory sounds much better than both of them.
I am still testing playing them side by side, and I think I will retain only one of them in future.

Hi Lawrance,
I am going to invest a Model A (Paul Desmond was using a model A) tell u after I got it....
a very similar alternative to that is a Morgan 3C.

Selmerboy,
any significant difference between a Master model and a Model A?? have u tried variations such as with and without the metal band?

:D
My Master and Model-A Gregories both have metal bands. I was told those without metal bands are total different.
The Master has slightly higher baffle which supposedly can give brighter sound. Indeed, it is slightly brighter and focused than my Model-A.
In short, they are different, and I like both of them. But guess I would excel my skill by playing on only one of them.
The Masters are traded cheaper than Model-A, so it may not be a bad idea to buy a Master and check out the so called "Gregory" tone.

whatever,
Do you mind telling us how much is your Model-A 4A 16? Please share your views on the tonal characteristics and playability later.

lol...I got it for 400 USD....maybe expensive....but..you know....people getting vintage saxophones are mostly mindless on money when they see their long hunting ones....and thats the brass banded one....
Sure....I will do you a assessment on the playability...and also I got a Otto Link Millenium tenor mpc coming.......paypal ready today!!! and should be around at most half a month....
quite exciting....
I am playing mostly on my Selmer SS sololist alto HR mpc...B* opening...slightly narrow for me...but good sound...a C* will do the trick....but I dare not open it myself....I opened a Rico Royal soprano mpc and it is too wide for me :(
Let's keep sharing!!!
