Subject: hunting Curs with hounds in comp

Twenty years ago I trained a real nice young Leopard for a man in Fla. This dog was the type that could win, split treed, etc. His owner paid me to hunt him in a couple local hunts, then hunt him in the Grand American, at Orangeburg, which is a very large hunt. Back then they were ACHA, and Curs were cast with hounds. I drew out with a famous walker dog, a very famous redbone, with a pro handler, and a well known english. When we met, I got laughed at by the redbone and walker men, and the english hound man got mad, withdrew, wasn't hunting his hound with a Cur!
Mr. Sarver,s Lep quickly got way ahead, treeing lay ups. The red dog was confused, and the walker just wasn't as quick. After second hr the red dog minused out. Things looked good! I had earned respect from the walker man. In the last hr. { three hrs back then } The older, experienced Walker, and his good handler, took the lead. Tuck was only about 14 months old. The Walker won the cast, and placed high in the hunt. But for sure, The leopard Cur got a lot of looks the next day!
I guess things have not changed much. Some hound men are humored, others upset, but MANY are aware that the Leopards are capable of winning. The gentleman that won my cast , told me his dog only won due to his dog's maturity, and was GLAD it was a three hr hunt, not two! Rex
