Jasmine Trias Up Close
by Anna Pedrosa

You have to know this straight up: The person writing this article is an American Idol fan. I won't tell you who I was rooting for but I did watch season three through to the finale and hope I can watch the next season when it airs in January.

Talk floated about Jasmine Trias coming to the Philippines as early as her entering into the final ten. It was just an idea back then, because we had all found out that she was Filipino.

There was another Filipino in the final group of ten: Camille Velasco. Somehow, it was Jasmine who stole our hearts.

Some time last month, someone asked me hush-hush to think of ways I, as the editor of the website, could help with Jasmine's trip. So I thought, the usual stuff, plus we'd get to sit on a press conference--you know, a group thing.

It came to a surprise then that we were told we were going to interview Jasmine Trias one on one! But it was kept so quiet that I could only tell one other person: the person who'd be taking pictures at the interview.

Thankfully, Pia knows my fascination for the TV reality series and she was fully supportive.

Call time was at 12 noon.

"Do you think they'll feed us?" I asked her.

"They should," she said.

No such luck, so our stomachs were growling, but we waited anyway. Our beloved synergy organizer was so efficient, patient and organized that we were able to do so many interviews for several TV shows, AM and FM radio and internet all in record time.

As we were waiting, we saw Marvin Agustin, who was going to do the first interview. He was chatting away with the staff and crew and I was oblivious until Pia noticed his shirt.

Then the funniest thing happened, because he passed by, caught my eye, smiled and said "hi". So I said "hi" back and smiled, though I doubt if he remembered where he ever met me. See, that's the perk of working in a TV station. You get to meet a lot of people other folks fantasize about. *laughter*

Jasmine arrived a bit late as she had a full schedule that day. But being the professional that she is, she dove right in to interview after interview with such kindness, politeness and poise. I give her an A-plus for attitude.

Marvin made her dance the otso-otso. And she was such a good sport to do it, too! I was liking this girl more every minute.
( Oh, brother.. -mmJun)

Then came time for Wazzup Wazzup. I died when Vhong Navarro wore a flower in his hair. I died again when he introduced her as Jasmine Timberlake. That guy is sooo funny! And I think jasmine had a good time during the interview as well because she was laughing the whole time.

All along, I thought the people were going to leave when it came to our (radio and internet) turn. After all, we didn't need the cameras and lights, right? Well, when Paulo, our beloved coordinator who is really efficient (sorry, I'm just so amazed at him that I had to say it again) called us in, there was still a number of people there. *nerves rattle*

I caught the tail end of her interview with FM radio (you can catch it over DWRR).

Jasmine considers the Philippines "home" as much as Hawaii because she uses the word to describe both places. She has said in past interviews that she is overwhelmed at the love she is getting from fans here. She calls it "Unbelievable, to win a crowd of thousands..."

And she will see thousands more when they flock to see her at various appearances in Metro Manila's malls.

Asked what the sweetest thing a fan has ever done for her, Jasmine said it was a "collage of my whole American Idol experience... pictures and little writings here and there..."

She says, however, that so far, there have been no fans who have stalked her or overstepped the bounds of loving appreciation.

There is one thing that she misses about her "pre-celebrity" days, and it's her privacy. "Privacy is a luxury now and I don't have much time to myself to just relax..."

Whenever she has free time, Jasmine says her favorite thing to do is, "Sleep. When I'm not sleeping, I'm shopping, eating or talking on the phone." A typical teenager.

Her favorite food is, of course, McDonalds' "chicken nuggets. The Jasmine trio... and strawberry floats. I love strawberry floats."

She says the celebrity status has not really affected her relationship with her family. "I don't get to see them as often as before, being on the road, you know, travelling everywhere, but nothing has really changed."

The American Idol tour just ended in Singapore recently.

Asked if she'd consider moving to the Philippines, Jasmine states frankly that it's not in her plans. "I don't know if I'm gonna move out here. I think i'm really gonna stay at home. I've been there all my life... but I will be coming back."

We can expect more of Jasmine as she is definitely thinking of getting into TV, movies, commercials, and of course, more music. With all that, she's hoping to fit in her studies. "I'm going to be going to college later on when everything's settled down."

To end one interview and begin with the next, all Jasmine had to do was turn around and look at me. We were sitting facing each other on a red sofa (that kinda does something to whatever you're wearing, doesn't it? But Jasmine still looked pretty.).

We played a word association game and here are some of her answers:

Simon Cowell: (momentary silence) Wow... he's really nice in person, actually *smiles*

Fantasia: Funny!

Philippines: It's cool! I like it!
I asked her how it was like being sequestered at the American Idol home in Hollywood. "It was a lot of fun, actually. We got to really bond as a group... and we got to see how our living habits were. All the girls would share a bathroom together, and we had to try to be patient with each other, and live with each other... That was a lot of fun though!"

She says among the contestants, she got closest to La Toya.

Many fans were jealous of the fact that Jasmine got to be close to Ryan Seacrest, but apparently, she wasn't that impressed. "Ryan Seacrest is a typical kind of guy, I don't know... He looks like a typical American guy, you know what I mean, so he didn't really stand out to me... but he is a cute guy, very good looking."

Internet users will be a bit disappointed because she says, "I only go online to check my email... I don't really chat or anything like that."

But she HAS googled herself and has seen some of her fansites! She doesn't have a public feedback mail, but an official website is in the works. "One of my friends is creating one for me, but not right now."

One of the facts that floated around on the internet was her brother's statement that she wipes out a lot when she surfs. She just smiles and rolls her eyes, "See, that's my brother talking now. He likes to tease me."

Looking forward a year, Jasmine says she hopes to be doing what she is doing right now as well as TV and movie appearances, "Having an album, still singing, being successful in my career..."

And one of the things she would love to do is collaborate with Alicia Keys, who she says inspired her music. "Listening to all kinds of music is an inspiration, but I love listening to Alicia Keys."

Locally, she says she'd like to duet with Regine Velasquez.

Jasmine took formal lessons at the Performing Arts Academy in Hawaii. But apart from her discipline and her talent, it is her attitude and personality that will bring her far.

When she talks to a person, she looks them straight in the eye and gives them her full attention. She makes them feel liked and appreciated and she is extremely polite but not afraid to have fun.

American Idol's nasty judge may have thought that Jasmine was too young, but with the tour and her TV appearances here, Jasmine is proving that she can handle everything she sets her mind to.

To her fans, she always has these words to say: "Thank you for inspiring me... I'm living a dream because of you folks."

I won't lie to Jasmine fans here.
It was Camille Velasco who I thought was
going to make the grade. But when I saw how
Manilow and Clive Davis were taking on Jasmine
I knew she was going to be the girl to excel.

Manilow. That's my boy..
