KEEP GILLINGHAM FC BLUE

Gillingham FC must keep with tradition and keep the home shirt as blue. We are the blue army.
Paul Scally is an arrogant, bullying self publicist . The only reason he wants to change the shirt colour to white, is so we look like his beloved Millwall.
What next? Change the name of the team to Paulscally FC ?
If no one likes the new blue shirt its because it looks like a rugby shirt. Why not have blue and black stripes.

I love Gillingham FC and will continue to support the club whatever changes but I like the blue kit better because it's easier to see. White is for boring teams. Please just simply swap the kits over. Call the Blue and black one the home kit and the white one the away kit, that way the fans get what we want and you dont spend any extra money on getting a new blue kit. You are going to get more money by making the home kit blue than you are by having the white kit blue.

All the best with your personal things Paul.

I cant believe it when I heard they wanted to change the home kit to white. Lots of people here in Reading that would go mad if they changed our home kit. I think the Gills should stay blue. No one can change the colour of a football team, its not right.

IT HAS TO BE KEPT AT BLUE, THAT IS THE TRADITION FOR GILLINGHAM FC AND THAT IS HOW IT SHOULD STAY! YOU SHOULD NEVER CHANGE YOUR HOME SHIRT COLOURS. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS CHANGE THE 'HOME' KIT TO THE 'AWAY' KIT AND VICE VERSA AND ITS BACK AS BLUE - IF YOUR READING CHAIRMAN - THATS THE SOLUTION!!!!

Lets go with what keeps the money rolling in. Play-offs here we come. Blue shirts / White shorts or White Shirts / Blue Shorts. I couldn't give a toss one way or the other. All that matters is getting behind the team. The whole club has turned itself on its head since 1993. Now it's time for those who can't cope to stand on their own heads and let the club develop. It's those who have the pride to wear the shirt and the badge that we need - not some stupid spurious debate about the poxy colour.

It happened to Argyle recently, White is such a dull colour on it's own. And it seems a stupid thing to do. Remember when Delia Smith took the Green off Norwich?

Scally, you won't ever admit to reading this, but look at what's here.

I don't care if it's only for one season, I don't care if it makes us richer than Man Utd, I don't care if it means we can see better in the dark. Gillingham FC are blue, through and through.

You are not bigger than the club, you will never be bigger than the club. The club existed, in blue, long before you did.

I like the white shirt BUT please don't use it as the home shirt. The Gills play in BLUE at home and have done in all of the 40 years that i have supported the club. If people like the white shirt i doubt if many will be sold because the supporters who have them will wear last seasons away shirt at Priestfield because it so similar to the new one.
Just a thought, if the players can see each other better in white why don't they all dye their hair white !! [;)]

Gills have been Blue since the Stone age and no one, not even Scally has the right to change that! We are Gillingham - blue through and through, Scally don't change the tradition - surely you should listen to us fans we're the ones who buy season tickets etc, without us the Mighty Gills would be nothing! We are the fans and as fans we have the right to say what we feel, if you don't listen who knows what may happen. I am not the sort of person to leave my club over a kit but there are people who are, keep the Blue, keep the Gills, keep the tradition!

Get your little book of Gills history out Scally, you won't find too many home kits that aren't blue. The mascots name is Tommy TruBlu, does the blue bit not mean anything to you, or is it secret code language for:

Hey look at me, I'm gonna change a club tradition, and no I'm not gonna lose some weight, if I take my glasses off I look fine!

I now reside in Sydney, NSW, where the number 1 game is rugby league (I know it's sad!) A few years ago a bright spark by the name of Murdoch decided to destroy decades of history and tradition by forming a "super league" which resulted in the merging of clubs, changing of kit colours and the like. The year before super league, merchandising made the original league administrators $35M. The first season of super league just $5M worth of goods were shifted, coupled with a reduction in crowds by some 60%

There's a lesson here Mr Scally, don't mess with tradition as it will come back to bite you where it will hurt you most - your pocket.

I have been a Gills fan since the 60's and I still wear a Gills shirt with pride here, 12,000 miles away from Priestfield. But that shirt is BLUE not white. Go on Scally, leave it alone....you know it makes sense!

Getting rid of Gills blue is like taking Newcastle's stripes away from them!!! IT'S STUPID!!!! The Gills fans rightfully feel about this cause and i support them all the way. Give them their Blue back or shall we just say to Newcastle that they can't have their stripes because a bunch of money minded directors just wanna change a clubs institution just to make a few more bucks. It is clear that the new kit has been designed for the sponsors rather than the football club of the fans...we have to ask ourselves where this 'commercial' side of the club is going to end....what will next season bring? a name change to "Sea France Utd" or maybe a ground change to the lovely port of Calais?

what will it take before someone realises why we're all doing this and get their priorities right?

WRONG, why oh why oh why do you feel the need to ruin the club even more? Blue blue blue blue blue, is a great colour and our TRADITIONAL colour, once again though Scally doesn't seem to know anything about tradition. Mr Scally.

I have been supporting the blues for for over 40 years, at this stage in my life I do not want to start supporting the whites. Blue is ingrained in my life as a Gillingham supporter. To be honest I do not care about away colours, they can change to whatever you want - but at home I want to support the blues.

I have bought a home shirt every year for too many years to remember - but I will not have a white shirt spoiling my collection.

Please re-consider.

Thank you

... that is synonymous with Gillingham football club. A Gillingham team playing in a white home strip is something that I will not recognise, nor will I be able to identify with. It is sheer folly to believe that you can alter a key component of a club's identity- it's home colours- for somEthing unoriginal whilst consigning history and tradition to the dustbin.

The blue does not merely represent the colour of the strip, but the colours of the club, the flag, and the club's history.

It also could be a potentially disastrous financial and commercial move that bring the club's finances into further jeopardy.

Let's stop this madness. GILLINGHAM PLAY IN BLUE. NOT WHITE.

Dear Mr Scally

I am surprised that as a businessman you have forgotten one the importance of branding and corporate identity.

Changes from traditional Branding have proved unsuccessful at many business (e.g. Coke, British Airways). I haven't seen ManU, Liverpool or Chelsea have any problems with dark shirts in winter conditions. Clubs in Italy and Spain bever break from their traditional colours either

The decision to change the kit from blue to white makes no sense and will damage the club's image

What more the new design is poor, tacky and cheap looking.

Regards

John Atkins

But what really matters is what Gillingham fans want and I don't think it could be any clearer.

You can see from the messages that we are all shocked and saddened by this change. Mr Scally, you will end up the loser because hardly anyone will buy this shirt. Even if Gills fans like the blue and black hooped shirt they will be put off buying it because of your thoughtless attitude. I appreciate what you have done for the club but please remember, you are not bigger than the club or the fans. People now see you as someone who sold out for the money and may realise that they do not want someone like you to run THEIR football club. It's too late to re-design the shirt but make the white one an away strip and keep the blue and black hoops for home so we at least retain some of our blue.

Ever I since I was a boy. That's what i have shouted from the terraces. I guess if the blue goes, then probably I will go as well. Your colour is part of your identity, change that and you change the team.

The saddest thing for me was the chairmans remark, which ignored what the fans felt, but at least 'Sea France' likes it. How many shirts are they buying!!!!

Make the blue shirt the home one, and I'll buy it.

Once again you have decided your bigger than this club Mr Scally well start using your brain. Gillingham is about its traditions and history as well as your fast buck. I always buy a shirt and if you take us to a white kit i won't buy it so you'll lose out. You could be a hero at this club but instead you continue to shit on all decent Gillingham fans except the minority Scallyite pratts you seem to breed around priestfield these days.

Gwan, change the colours. And the name while you are at it. And in fact, why not move the team somewhere else as well? Ah, sure, change the whole thing and get them playing rugby. I'm sure you believe the history and identity of your club stands for nothing, nevermind the views of the fans, so start with changing the colours and see what else you can bugger up while you can.

Pleast take a long goog look at this incredibible thread, say's it all really does it not???
Please keep it Blue at home, it's Gillingham, it's all we know at home, we don't want to play in white at home thanks.
If it is down to Seafrance and money, then have a radically changed home strip but predomantly blue in colour. What's wrong in having the same strip proposed at the moment but in blue?? Still be a radical change.
Hope you see sence, thanks for ALL you've done for the Gills in the past, don't spoil it now.

Paul Scally, to change the colour of the home kit without consulting the fans is a ludicrous act. Keep the blue shirt, the justification of having a white shirt bwcause they sold more last year is not a credible reason. People brought the white shirt because there was no point in buying the blue shirt as it was basically the same as the shirt the year before. It would not be surprising if the most popular shirt this year were the blue one. It would be better to be playing in a blue shirt in a blue stadium in front of supporters wearing blue shirts than wearing white shirts.

It is as simple as this. There is no real reason why this change has to happen. If you look at a similar case of the Arsenal Badge changing last season that is due to the copyright issues that were costing the club in revenue to pirating. I really don't think people are pirating Gills Blue Shirts! I hope that Mr Scally sees sense and withdraws this nonsense idea. Gillingham has a social club called the BLUES rock cafe (not White Rock Cafe) and a mascot called Tommy TrueBLUE (Not William ReallyWhite!)

I would also wish Mr Scally and his family well with his current personal situation.

Just thought I'd sign this to let you know that i think changing a club's traditional colours is not the right thing to do. I'm not really a Gillingham fan but I do subscribe to the mailing list for some bizarre reason and i figured i'd add my support to the cause.

Good luck hope you get your old colours back, this happened to my team (Bristol Rovers) once as they tried to take away our quarters, we don't have a lot to be proud of at the moment, but at least we can say we're one of the few clubs to tradiionally play in quarters (yes it is clutching a straws :+) but it was put right within a season hopefully the same will happend for you guys.

Paul Scally, you are a disgrace to football. You're selling out your club's identify just to make money. In my opinion, changing the colour of the home shirt is just wrong as they are the club's colours. You and Charles Koppell are bringing about the death of English football by breaking from tradition.

Mr Scally, please do not change our kit to white.

It is exactly the same as Charlie Koppell expecting Wimbledon fans to pay crippling train fairs to go up to Milton Keynes every other week (though not quite to the same degree). In that case, NONE of the Dons fans were consulted, much less have their opinions considered.

If we were employees, and you were paying us, then yes, I would understand.
But that is not the case. We are paying OUR hard earned money to buy shirts, year in, year out.
We should certainly have a say if there is to be any radical/controversial changes to our kit.

This is going to cause another split in the club, which is one of the reasons why there is such a lack of atmosphere at Gillingham these days.

I implore you. Go back to using blue.
Believe me, you need to win as many fans as you can right now.
Just switch the blue and white around on the shirt. Simple!

Mr Scally has told the media that he has spoken to the management, the players and the main sponsors who are all in agreeement that the white shirt is their preference. Let me remind anyone who needs to be reminded that Chairmen, managers and players are ALL temporary and in the vast majority of cases their interest is financial - nothing less.

Supporters however, ARE IN IT FOR LIFE and either we, our sons and daughters, or our grandsons and granddaughters will still be following the Club in another 70 years time - Paul Scally will be gone, Andy Hessenthaler will be gone and SeaFrance will be gone - therefore, my view is that supporters should be able to be consulted and their views taken into account when such a major change as this seems to be occuring.

The move to white is puzzling at best, and I hope that common sense prevails and we play in BLUE for 2003/2004.

Sometimes we have to stand up for tradition....not always, but sometimes. Rarely have I disagreed with your actions at the club, you've allowed us to watch the best football I've seen at Gillingham since Keith Peacock's days, but I cannot agree that it's Ok to change OUR clubs colours for a sponsor....not even for one season.....

As a Millwall fan, you must know how unpopular this move was there....they're in Blue.....so why follow their mistakes? Let us play in Blue/Black.....

Clearly the fans are opposed to this. Why weren't they consulted? Chairmen/owners must stop doing whatever they like with clubs, and the fans can make this happen.

The home kit could have had at least 50% blue in it, then everyone would have been happy. The blue and black away kit would make a better home kit. I seem to remember us having a good season in blue and black stripes.

Well Mr Scally you have really done it now. We were founded in 1893 as New Brompton, adopted the present title in 1913 and have played in BLUE ever since but still retained the Old Brompton Black in our Emblem. As a mark of respect.

And now in 2003 what have you done Mr Scally? Ruined a standing tradition of dismissing the HOME BLUE shirt as nothing more than a piece of scrap metal, or should that be rags?

You may be a short term so called Gills supporter but I think you are just a businessman in supporters clothing!

I for one am going to STAND up at the first home match and show my solidarity by wearing my BLUE HOME shirt with pride. And each match after that until YOU Mr Scally get the message. And I will shout as loud as I am able to the team to wear their traditional BLUE SHIRTS. (BLUE shirts, BLUE shirts, Blue shirts, Blue shirts. We are the BLUES. Don't forget there are more of us Mr Scally that are passionate enough to be a force to be reckoned with!!!!

And I am sure that the majority of GILLS supporters will follow on the first home match also the rest of the season and wear their BLUE SHIRTS with pride. As you will read by the response so far. The white kit as you will read is OK by us as the away colours but not home please.

Our dearly departed supporters must be turning in their graves.

Please, please listen to us, Don't destroy our heritage our tradition our way of life. Keep GILLINGHAM F.C. BLUE. forever.

I have just got back on the net and have seen the stories relating to the new shirt for next season.

Firstly, the excuse of the away shirts outsold the blue shirts.
Well Mr Scally, maybe they did but did you ever consider the real reason behind that - me thinks that the continual changes to the home shirt and the costs involved in buying them were major reasons? After all, even allowing for your elaborate marketing skills, most supporters do not have the access to an endless pot of money and probably feel that if they have one of the home shirts from the last 3 years that is suffice.

Secondly, who on earth thought up the excuse regarding winter days and evening games?
Under floodlights, with a white ball - please Mr Scally do you really think that most supporters have just come from the funny farm - I suggest next time you decide to prance around the ground you try it out - me thinks you will need the vision of Superman or the 6 million dollar man to see that playing in white shirts is better. Just ask any Everton, Ipswich Town or Millwall fan.

Thirdly, the last time I remember we changed to a lot of white was when Gerry Summers was involved with that awful Sheffield Wednesday look a like strip - and see what good that did us!!

Finally, using excuses of strips changing over 100 years ago when we were New Brompton does not apply. You are looking to attract new customers to the game during these difficult times - do not drive them away with poorly concieved and thought marketing ploys - after all, and this is to be considered by all those that are considering purchasing the new shirt - what would stop the club from caving into the high level of expected and justified protest mid season and reverting back to a new blue shirt - ooopppps must pay twice in a season. Good cashflow for the club - but remember only if people/fans support it.

Sorry to rant and rave but this decision is poorly thought out and is one that I have some level of understanding for the reasons given.

Whats going to happen to all the chants -
"we are white we are white we are dynamite"
"Andy Hessantahlers white and white army"

THese are indeed strange times.

Sorry Paul, your strong leadership has done wonders for the Gills since you took over but i genuinely feel you have lost the plot here. You are also going to loose the finacial support of many loyal Gills fans who beleive some things should not be open to change for the sake of pleasing a sponser, who i am sure that if they had known the anti Seafrance feeling that this short sighted move has generated, would have settled for a true Blue home kit.

I have been supporting the Gills since 1958 and I am disgusted at this decision. I live in Wiltshire, and although I was at both Wembley play offs, I now rarely watch the Gills play, mainly because of the attitude of the money mad and power crazy Scally - including his treatment of lifelong supporters who do not agree with him. He may have saved the club in the 90's - but people like me loyally supported them through similar dark periods in the 50's in 60's and we have made just as big contribution as he has.

I am now so fed up with the actions of this person that I have become a supporter of my local club, who actually play in white and carry the nickname of the Whites. I am not sure that I shall ever return to Priestfield all the time Scally is in charge.

I think it's ridiculous. Everyone knows Gillingham wear blue and fans strongly associate with their team's prinicple colour. I'd hate it if our board changed my own cub (Grimsby's) colours for no good reason. They can do what they want with the away kit - which they do!

Don't buy the shirt, it's as simple as that, and they'll soon change their tune. They've probably only done it as the sponsor's logo shows up better, but if nobody buys one they'll end up shooting themselves in the foot.

Yet again you act with such stupidity it boggles the mind! There is only one reason why the white strip outsold the blue last season, and that is because the blue strip was IDENTICLE to the previous season's strip barring a change in collar.
You cant just change the colour of the first team shirt of a club because that goes against everything that football is about.....tradition. If Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal changed strip to a white shirt, there would be a public uproar and the people involved would lose all support of the fans and probably end up sacked....your very lucky the Gills arent that big because you might already be out the door Mr Chairman....football fans are petty, but this is not a petty issure of losing one match, this is our history, our culture, our tradition!
You said how when we changed to blue in the first place there would have been uproar, and this is the same, your wrong, the whole club CHANGED from New Brompton, to Gillingham FC, so of course you change the kit.
EVERY SINGLE REASON you have given for the change is ungrounded and just plainly poor.
You let us down
For gods sake change it

Scally - you've done it again. What a disgrace you really are, aiming to grab a headline, whatever the cost!

You have sold out the tradition of our club once more for the sake of a few more pounds and what rubs insult into injury is that you have done this for the sake of a design which emphasises the French flag.

All of this for the sake of a few extra quid! It's bad enough that we have Sea 'FRANCE' on our shirts, we now have the French flag - a country that shows racist anti-English views whenever possible, as well as cowardice, treachery and a lack of gratitude for its saviours!

What a disgrace - I urge no-one to buys this kit and stick with BLUE.

What a disgrace trading in our history for the lure of the Franc.

Best option is to persuade as many as possible to buy the away? (blue / black )kit instead of the nightmare white kits, and to convince as many as possible to turn up on matchdays in these or the old BLUE kits. If people do not have a replica kit then get them to wear blue clothing and make Priestfield a field of BLUE.

you can see for yourself that we are all outraged by what you have done, my opinion of Hess has lowered because of what has happened, I thought he was a gills man but it turns out he is just a business man too! It really does upset me and many others to see this being done, yesterday was a sad day for Gillingham Football Club! just because we are sponsored by a company from France, it does not mean we should change our kits merely to accomodate what they want! I really do hope the club come to their senses, as this a decision which simply won;t be tolerated, the fans are a big part of this club aswell! Never forget that!

The white kit would be prefectly acceptable as an away kit. I realize that tradition means absolutely nothing in some football clubs these days, but Gillingham (after the New Brompton Excelsiors have always) has always meant BLUE at home.
Strangley enough, I even find the blue and black away hoops a bit of an insult! Why do we have to try and be so "radical" with the changes? Let's get it right - back to BLUE or BLACK & BLUE at home.

I can't stand kits with no collars!!

I hate white kits!!

I haven't bought a kit for 3 years now and I was disapointed to see another Round neck one and white the first choice kit!!

The round necks on kits are both itchy and restrictive, im sure most fans would prefer a collar which wears nicely with a jumper on a cold day and looks so much better

It looks like we are going for P.E kits in the last few seasons, bring back the nice shirts from the past like the medway news blue home kit, the famous black and blue stripes revamped with the Seafrance logo for a nice design

I hate the idea of white, we have lost the plot somewhere

We are BLUE forever not dirty white

What is the point of this? We've played in blue for nearly eighty years, so why change it now? If a club can't be proud of its own colours, how can it expect anyone else to respect it? It makes us look like a two-bob outfit who'll do anything to earn a bit of cash, and judging by the response of most supporters, it'll have precisely the opposite effect.

SCALLY WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PLAYING AT.

YOU GIVES US THREE VERY NICE KITS BUT THEN YOU MESS ABOUT WITH THE ORDER OF THEM.

WHATS THE POINT IN TWO AWAY KITS ANYWAY BECAUSE WE WILL ALWAYS WEAR THE YELLOW AWAY ONE AND WHEN THAT CLASHES WE WILL WEAR THE HOME SHIRT AWAY FROM HOME ( EG NORWICH )

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF YOU HAD YOUR WAY THE BLUE KIT WOULD NOT BE THERE AT ALL AND WE WILL HARDLY HAVE THE CHANCE TO WEAR THE BLUE SHIRTS.

WHICH MEANS YOU ARE EXPECTING US TO PAY UP FOR A SHIRT WHICH WE WILL HARDLY SEE WORN BY OUR TEAM!!!!!!!!!

WE AREN'T A BIG CLUB WITH A HUGE FAN BASE SO WE CAN'T AFFORD TO UPSET THE SUPPORTERS WE DO HAVE SO PLEASE SCALLY JUST REINSTATE BLUE AS THE HOME SHIRT.

At a time when the club needs as much income as possible it seems REALLY stupid to come up with a home shirt that angers so many people that they will not buy ANY shirt this season.

There are some people who like the white shirt and would buy it but only if it was an away kit.

Come on Mr Scally, think how much money a home shirt will generate if the supporters can accept it.

Keep it true, keep it BLUE.

Paul Scally's phrase of "Never Look Back" was fine for its time but there are some things seeped in history and tradition that cannot and should not be forgotton. The Gills have been predominantly blue since their inception and our traditional home colours are blue shirts and white shorts. Variations on a theme for marketing purposes is all well and good - but blue is the main colour! Our history and identity will be gone forever and the sight of Millwall playing in blue at Priestfield while we are in white would be the last straw. Reward points or not - I will boycott all merchandise and the "Blues Rock Cafe" until common sense prevails.

Surely this has been an administration error on behalf of some poor overworked megastore lab technician!

We surely can not be playing in a recycled French Tricolore to keep our sponsors happy!

We surely aren't going to do a Millwall and switch to white (they actually used to play in white). That only lasted a season which will be too long for me. Watching Millwall play in blue at Priestfield? No ****ing thank you!!!

It has to be blue (or at least the blue and black hoops as they are obviously in production). Also, how pukey does that yellowish kit look?
