Dance With Life
CHAPTER 8

Robin looked back and forth between the two men, waiting for an answer. Both, Sonny and Jason, stayed silent as they exchanged a rather worried look. Robin, in that instant, did not look all that patient. She gave Jason a pressing look – one he tried to avoid at first but eventually couldn’t. At that point, Robin knew that there was a lot more that Jason and Sonny were not telling her.

“It’s simple safety measures, Robin.” Sonny said, trying to dismiss her worries, but obviously couldn’t.

“Sonny…” she said in a stronger tone, as she searched his dark eyes for an honest answer.

“Robin,” Sonny started, attempting to stop her inquiries. “You’re making a big deal out of a simple, friendly gesture…” he added with a sigh, but Robin still didn’t buy it.

Not at all actually. The look on her face was a disbelieving one as she shook her head slightly.

“Don’t lie to me.” She told him through her teeth, trying to hold back an awkward rush of anger.

“Robin… You know better than to ask questions you know I can’t answer.” Sonny replied steadily.

“Don’t!” Robin warned him suddenly with an angry stare. “Don’t feed me these lines. I’m not Carly.” She said as calmly as possible.

That name. Wow. It had been such a long time coming. She couldn’t even remember the last time she had uttered that name. As soon as she’d let it out, she almost wished she hadn’t. Carly wasn’t a subject she wished to discuss at the moment, but, surprisingly enough, the look in Sonny’s eyes didn’t change all that much at her mention. Robin paused and took a deep breath before addressing him again.

“Sonny, I know you.” She said quietly. “You and I… We haven’t even talked in over a year and…” she added but was interrupted by Sonny.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t want to protect you.” He said in a caring, almost frightened tone.

“Protect me from what??” she demanded, but he didn’t answer.

Robin resigned herself and turned towards Jason, who had been silent up until this point. One simple look and Robin knew that whatever it was, it had to be very serious. But she didn’t get anything else from him.

“Fine.” She said, throwing her hands in the air in a sign of defeat. “You don’t want to tell me anything? Fine.” She added, throwing Jason a challenging look. “Then tell them they can go home. Tell them you don’t want them guarding us anymore.” She told him.

“Robin…” Jason spoke in a low voice.

“What?” Robin asked, pressing him. “What, Jason?”

“I can’t do that. I won’t do that.” He replied, finally.

“Why?” Robin then asked him in a pleading voice. She then paused shortly. “Jason…” she then added in that soft, familiar tone. “Jason, look at me….please…”

Jason, who had been avoiding her eyes up until this point, finally looked deep into her eyes and struggled to keep a straight face. She stepped closer to him, never leaving his eyes with hers, as Sonny watched them intently.

“If my mother is in any kind of danger, I have the right to know… Jason… I need to know.” Robin whispered as emotions filled her every word. “It has something to do with the car accident, doesn’t it?” she asked after a little while.

Jason sighed inwardly and finally gave in. He knew Robin well enough to know that she wouldn’t let go – not when it came to her mother. But, most importantly, he knew that she had the right to know what was going on. He couldn’t lie to her – not again.

“It wasn’t an accident.” He finally spoke.

“Jason…” Sonny said disapprovingly.

“Sonny, we have to tell them sooner or later. If they know, they can be more careful.” Jason said before turning back to Robin.

“Tell me what? Know what?” she demanded, as worries filled her voice. “Does this have anything to do with the business?” she asked.

“No.” Sonny immediately replied.

Robin turned to face him with a concerned and doubtful look on her face.

“Can you promise me?” She asked of him, determinedly.

“It has nothing to do with me. I promise.” Sonny spoke softly.

“I’m not even technically working for Sonny right now, so it has nothing to do with that.” Jason added.

“technically…” Robin repeated as she stared at Jason.

“That’s not the point.” Sonny interjected.

Robin let go of Jason’s stare and looked at Sonny.

“If it’s not about the organization then who is it?”

“Faison.” Sonny replied as a confused look came over Robin’s face.

“Faison?” she said, slightly confused. “I thought this was all over; that he had been dealt with….”

“He was working with Helena Cassadine.” Jason told her.

Robin paused and looked back and forth between Sonny and Jason before running her hands through her dark hair.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?” She whispered, emotionally, as she stared at Jason. “And please, don’t say it was to protect me.”

Jason swallowed back a mix of emotions before answering.

“We had no proof.” He softly confessed.

“Do you have any now?” She quickly asked him.

“Information has leaked around that Helena and Faison’s men have indeed approached your mother recently and it would not surprise me if they were behind the hit and run as well. We’re working on finding that out. I don’t know what they’re planning but until we find out, neither of you are safe here.” Sonny told her just before his cell phone rang. “Excuse me.” He said as he stepped away to answer it.

Robin took a deep breath and slowly sat down in a char nearby. She closed her eyes, trying to process everything and come up with answers to her own questions. Jason quietly sat in a chair beside her.

“So, this is why you’re really back, isn’t it?” she whispered softly as she turned to look at him.

Jason nodded slightly.

“When Sonny told me that your mother was alive and that there had been threats….” Jason said, swallowing back with difficulty as he looked at her vulnerable face. “I had to come.” He said in the most honest tone he could make out.

“Why?” She couldn’t help but ask.

Jason looked at her intensely.

“You know why.” He whispered back as their eyes locked.

They both paused for a while, staring at each other. She knew why. It was the same reason why she’d gone up on that bridge that night and why she’d let him kiss her the night before. They both knew why. It just wasn’t that simple now. Robin then lowered her eyes and sighed, painfully.

“I don’t know what to do…” she sighed.

“You do what’s best. For everyone.” He said softly. “Like you always do.” He added in an emotional whisper.

“Do you mean that?” she asked him with a serious look on her face.

Jason looked into her eyes and saw the underlying questions in the way she looked at him.

“I do.” He finally spoke, so softly that he barely felt the words escape his mouth.

Robin glanced at Sonny, still on the phone, from a certain distance.

“So, what do we do now?” she asked, gently.

“We find a way to keep you safe.” He replied, carefully.

“This place is run by the Cassadines. We’re not safe here.” Robin pointed out.

“I know.” Jason agreed.

There was a long silence between the two of them and Jason saw Robin’s eyes fill with invisible tears.

“I can’t let anything happen to her…” she whispered as her eyes welled up with emotion. “I really can’t lose her…”

Jason instinctively reached his hand up to touch her face. He let his warm, soft fingers rest on her cheek as they both stared into one another’s eyes.

“You won’t.” he promised her.

He knew he should pull his hand away but he simply couldn’t bring himself to do it. The moment was too intense for him to think practically or rationally. The fact that Robin did not pull away was not helping him either. So, they just sat there – a moment stolen in time – as he wiped a tear from her cheek, and they stared at one another.
