CHAPTER 7 –

Anna’s accident – or so it seemed – hit Robin like a ton of brick. All of a sudden, she felt like the 14-year-old who had once had to go through all of this and it killed her. It killed her to imagine that she might have to go through it all again. Fortunately, her fears were appeased when Alan reassured her that Anna would be alright. The car had injured her badly but she would survive. The simple word – survive – made Robin able to breathe again.

That same night, Anna woke up, holding the hand of a sleeping Robin. The multiple bruises and scratches on her face were almost painless compared to the terrible wound on her left side, but, even with it all, she smiled. A soft smile appeared on her face as she looked at Robin’s sleeping form.

Everyone was able to breathe a sigh of relief – especially Robin – when Anna finally opened her eyes that night. Even though everyone kept reassuring Robin that her mother was out of the woods, the young woman refused to go home. Therefore, Mac offered his niece a shoulder to lean on and agreed to stay with her at the hospital, especially since Jason didn’t seem to be going anywhere either. He didn’t talk to Robin. He simply stayed there, all night, waiting in the waiting room with them, for reasons Robin couldn’t grasp entirely.

--

The morning shift began at the hospital. Jason woke in a start at the sound of a patient being rushed through the corridor to surgery. He rubbed his face with both his hands and looked at his surroundings. He still had some traces of blood on his t-shirt, even though most of it had been cleaned the night before. Jason slowly lifted himself up in his chair and scanned the place with his eyes. Mac was asleep in a chair near the wall and Felicia seemed to be talking to Bobbie near the front desk – at a certain distance from where he was standing. His eyes then fell upon Robin, asleep in a chair, curled up, in front of him. His heart nearly skipped a beat as he remembered how beautiful she was when she was sleeping.

Robin looked as exhausted as it was humanly possible to be. Jason paused, then reached for the leather jacket that had been resting on the chair beside him and finally got up. His eyes never truly left Robin, except to glance at the front desk, making sure he wasn’t being watched or something of the kind – probably only on reflex. He slowly walked towards Robin, holding his jacket and knelt beside her chair. Making sure as to not wake her up, he gently placed the jacket on her body. He stayed there, looking at her for a few seconds before standing up straight once more, and slowly walking away.

Standing a few meters away was Carly, Felicia and Bobbie, who had all seen Jason’s gesture, but none of them said anything about it.

--

Jason’s footsteps were slow yet constant as he walked through the hospital corridor towards a room. He stopped himself before reaching it completely and looked through the small window in the middle of the door. The room was dark but he could still distinguish a sleeping figure in one of the beds. Carefully, Jason turned the doorknob and held the door open. He pondered whether he should enter or not and then mentally questioned himself as to why he was actually here. Why was he going inside this room? He wasn’t sure why. He just needed to.

He slowly let the door close behind himself as he stepped into the room. The blinds had been lifted and the sun was beginning to rise, finally adding some much needed light to this otherwise depressing hospital. Jason didn’t sit in the chair; he simply stood at the side of the bed. He made sure that the person was asleep and well as he checked out the monitors, and just as he was about to step back and leave, the woman stirred up and slowly opened her eyes.

Jason pondered whether he should just keep walking out or not, but his answer came when the woman stared at him intensely.

Anna’s eyes were riveted on the man who stood at her bedside.

“I’m sorry,” Jason started softly as he took a step back. “I was just leaving.” He added but Anna stopped him.

“No,” she whispered in a rusty voice. “Please don’t.” she asked of him.

Jason looked at her, searching her face for any indication as to why she would want him to stay but he didn’t find any. All he found were the striking resemblances to Robin. They both stared in complete silence for what seemed to be eternity and then Jason took a step forward.

“How…huh…” Jason started, feeling a bit uncomfortable, which rarely happened. “How are you feeling?” he finally asked, not too sure what to say at this point.

“I’m alive.” She said with a tiny, almost unnoticeable smile. “How’s Robin?” she quickly added in a more concerned tone.

“Sleeping.” Jason answered as simply as possible.

Anna examined Jason’s face and then saw the watered, pale, traces of blood left on his t-shirt and she took a deep breath. She looked up to his face and saw a certain mix of emotion that she couldn’t exactly put a name to. She was starting to get what everyone had been telling her. Only Robin knew how to read him, or understand him. But what she saw also made her understand why Robin was able to do so.

“At the risk of sounding redundant,” Anna said softly, “Thank you.” She told him. “For saving my life….again.”

“I didn’t do anything.” Jason said calmly as he merely moved his head.

Anna smiled – for real this time – at the sound of his words. She lowered her eyes momentarily and then looked up to his face once again.

“I was told you would say that.” She said as they both paused for a while. “I was also told it’s never true.” She added, almost whispering, as the look on Jason’s face softened.

Those were Robin’s words. He could still hear her trembling voice when she had spoken them on the bridge, as a tear rolled down her face.

Jason paused as a thoughtful look spread across his face. Anna, sensing he wanted to say something, waited silently as he seemed to ponder his words. He cleared his throat and tried to keep his tone as even as possible.

“I know that it’s probably not my place to say this. Maybe I don’t have the right to say it, or to be grateful for it, but,” he started as his voice betrayed his impartial resolve. “Thank you, for what you did for Robin.” He finally spoke.

Anna detected a slight amount of pain in his eyes as he spoke the words. No matter what had happened between him and Robin, she wasn’t blind. Anyone who would have seen Jason’s eyes at that instant would have known just how deeply he still cared for the young Scorpio.

“She’s my daughter.” Anna spoke softly after a little while. “I would die before I let anything or anyone hurt her again.” She said calmly.

“So would I.” Jason whispered, almost to himself, but Anna couldn’t help but hear it.

“Then tell me,” Anna said in a stronger voice. “How is Robin…for real?”

“She’s okay.” Jason replied.

“She is….” Anna breathed, relieved. “How does she look?” she then asked and Jason paused.

“Beautiful…” He replied in a bare whisper.

Scorpio Living Room

Jason: "You got the easy job. Didn't ya?"

Robin: (laughing) "I was a little girl. What did you want me to do, carry him?"

Jason: "Oh yeah, your dad was a real good teacher."

Robin: "He was!" (Camera shows the Tin Man watching and waiting outside with a gun) "You know what I like?"

Jason: "What?"

Robin: (smiling) "A hundred thousand nights like this one."

Jason: (thinking) "That's 273 years."

Robin: "Perfect." (They kiss. Jason kisses her neck, then picks her up) "Wait we're supposed to be dancing here!" (She puts her arms around him, and he spins her around the room. camera shows the Tin Man outside again) "Oh my God." (She’s laughing) "Hey!"

Jason puts her down, they are both laughing. He grabs her hand, and twirls her around. A shot is fired through the window and breaks the glass. Robin screams. Jason throws her onto the floor away from him. He looks out the window, and sees the Tin Man. Another shot is fired.....
Images of Jason being shot and Anna being run over by a car got all blurry and mixed up. She saw herself try to help them both but fail and then…

Robin woke up in a start. Her breathing was uneven. She quickly calmed down and looked around herself, seeing how busy the hospital had gotten in only a few hours. She sat up straight in the chair and looked down. Her eyes landed on the leather jacket that was now covering her shoulders. She slowly reached to take it off and held it in her hands. Her eyes were riveted on the jacket, knowing perfectly whose it was. She took a deep breath as she looked up and got up. She slight stretched her arms and looked at her mother’s room. She walked towards the door as a few patients walked by her in wheelchairs.

When she reached Anna’s room, she slightly hesitated before entering. But she finally did. She walked in and found her mother, awake, lying in bed. Anna immediately smiled at the sight of her daughter.

“Hi…” Anna said as Robin took a seat beside Anna’s bed.

“Hey there…” Robin said with a tired smile.

“How are you?” Anna asked as she took Robin’s hands into hers tightly.

“That was supposed to be my line.” She smiled, looking at her mom with an exhausted expression on her face.

“Have you been sleeping here?” Anna then asked with concern.

“I didn’t want to leave you…” Robin started. “You know, in case you needed anything…you know…just…”

“Robin…” Anna soothingly said but Robin didn’t stop.

“In case you needed some help with anything…I just…I wanted to be here…to help you.” Robin said as an emotional look haunted her eyes. “I wanted to help you.” She then whispered in a heartbreaking yet very calm voice.

“Robin…” Anna said as her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry…” Robin whispered.

“No.” Anna immediately said in a stronger voice. “No. Don’t be. I don’t want you to say that.” She quickly added as her heart broke to pieces. “Robin, don’t you ever, ever apologize for that.”

Robin looked into her mother’s eyes and paused. Living with reality was sometimes difficult, and now was one of those times. When she felt so helpless…

“You could have died, mom.” Robin pointed out realistically.

“I didn’t.” Anna also mentioned.

“But you could have.” Robin said in a calm voice. “And there is nothing I could have done to save you…You don’t know…” she added in a trembling voice. “You have no idea what it’s like to see someone you love lying there while you can’t do anything.” She said as they both paused for a moment. “And the funny thing is, I don’t know which is harder. Not being able to help you, or the thought that if I had, I might have killed you.” She honestly spoke.

“Robin, don’t think like that…” Anna whispered, trying to lift herself up in bed but Robin motioned for her to stop.

“I can’t lose you, mom… not again.” Robin said as one small tear rolled down her face and made its way down her jaw.

“Oh, Robin.” Anna breathed out as she wrapped her arms around her daughter.

--

Sonny stood in the corridor. Jason came up to him just as Sonny was turning his cell phone off.

“Did you take care of it?” Sonny asked as he turned to face Jason.

“Yes. Two of them are in front of the room at all times.” Jason answered.

“This is more serious than we expected…” Sonny said, almost to himself. “We can’t keep them here. General Hospital is the last place both Anna and Robin should be right now.”

“This place isn’t safe.” Jason added.

“That’s an understatement.” Sonny replied. “Did you get a look at the driver?”

“No.” Jason replied, almost feeling guilty he didn’t.

“I don’t think he or she was aiming just for one. They wanted both of them dead.” Sonny said through his teeth.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this Sonny.” Jason said in a low voice.

Just then, Robin spotted them and walked up to them. The rhythm in her footsteps indicated that she wasn’t too pleased with either of them at the moment.

“What the heck is going on?” She asked as anger filled her voice.

“Robin…” Sonny tried to stop her.

“No. Don’t ‘Robin’ me.” She said dismissing his attempt at addressing her. “Why are there two not-so-discrete guards in front of my mother’s hospital room?” she asked as her eyes travelled back and forth between the two men.
