Defiance of Danger

Chapter 1

The time was 3:30. It had been two hours since his plane landed at the Port Charles Airport. In a few hours he would be meeting Sonny and walking back into the life he could never seem to walk away from. When he left this past April, he was on a mission. He found his targets, eliminated the problem, then spent the rest of his time on a beach in Puerto Rico. This sense of not caring seemed to have taken over his life. He gambled away most of his money, slept with women he knew he would never see again, and drank the rest of the time away. It was beginning to become a cycle. Then he got a call from Sonny.

Carly betrayed him. Sorel got too close. Sonny needed him.

So here he was sitting in a lounge at the airport, unwilling and unmotivated to get up and leave. This why should he care attitude seemed to be driving his every move. His relationship with Sonny continued to deteriorate over the last year or so. It wasn't on purpose. He changed, he didn't have the same cares he did in the past. Now this supposed job of his had just become monotonous. He carried out his duties in a simplistic, robotic manner. He was living up to the expectations put forth upon him by the doctors and the Quartermaines. But what did he care. He life wasn't going to change. He had nothing to look forward to, nothing that had any meaning for him.

He was going to get up from his seat, in the midst of thousands of people rushing to their destination, and walk back into the life of unemotional, hard core brutality. If someone got in his way, he took care of them. If something got in his way, he eliminated it. This lifestyle was the same reason he dreaded heading to the penthouse. He wanted a change and it was up to him to make that change.

He knew he would never let that happen though. This was the only thing he knew. His life with Sonny was all he had going for him. If he didn't have Sonny checking up on him every now and then who knows what would've happened to him by now. Maybe lose control of his bike on a winding Puerto Rican road that outlined the costal cliffs? Drink himself to death? Cross someone who meant nothing to him and have this person end his life? Of course he could never be so lucky.

Elizabeth Webber's face crossed his mind in a still image. He prayed that he wouldn't run into her. He didn't mind her, but her constant concern for herself drove him up the wall. He never knew someone could be so inconsiderate and self absorbed. In the beginning it was her grief for Lucky that drove her, but now he saw that she felt something for him. He could never and would never let her act on that. That last thing he needed in his life was a commitment.

He slowly began his trek for the side exits leading to the outside world. He didn't want to waste time mixing it in with the masses. His journey became an interesting game of dodge ball as he avoided people running around, lugging kids and luggage around like there was no tomorrow. He finally managed to step outdoors where Johnny was supposed to meet him in an unmarked car. Scanning the immediate area he found no sign of the car or Johnny.

Sighing, he leaned against the building and decided he was going to have to wait outside. It had to be better than in the way too crowded airport. Closing his eyes, he let the hot, sweltering July sun beat down on his already tan face and felt a weird sense of calmness settle throughout his body. Normally feeling nothing, this sensation seemed to awaken his mind. After spending almost the last two years wandering aimlessly around the globe, with brief visits to this city, he was now back for another undetermined amount of time.

''Excuse me.''

Jason slowly opened his eyes and found a dark haired woman staring intently at him. ''Yeah,'' he asked with disinterest.

''Are you ready,'' she asked carefully with a thick British accent.

Jason's eyes narrowed in confusion. ''What?''

The woman noticed the confusion laced in the man's electric blue eyes, but remained unaffected. ''No need to play dumb. Is the car ready?''

''Who are you,'' he asked and for the first time took in the woman. Her brown hair was tied up in a ponytail, she was dressed in jeans and a simple white shirt, and wearing dark sunglasses. He could easily tell she was trying her best to fit in and act like she belonged when in fact she was an outsider.

She immediately realized this wasn't the man she was supposed to meet. ''Oh my. I'm deeply sorry.'' Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a car come to a screeching halt just ten feet away and two men jump out of the back seat. Just as the men pulled out their guns another car came blaring down the street in the opposite direction. A window rolled down and the man screamed for her to get inside, but before she had a chance to move the gun men sprayed the area with automatic fire.
