Attention News/Labour Editors:
School board management fails to add more time for students - strike continues

LONDON, ON, May 23 /CNW/ - Thames Valley District School Board management
wasted an opportunity to end a strike by Education and Instructional
Assistants today, tabling essentially the same contract offer that
precipitated a strike on May 11th, said CUPE negotiators.
"The board's position has not improved since EAs and IAs began their
strike," said Jennifer Kaufmann, CUPE national representative. "Instead of
offering more time for our members to spend with students, they were shuffling
the deckchairs on the Titanic today, moving increments to 15 minutes instead
of 10 minutes, but with no additional time since their last offer."
"The board would have us wait until September 2007 to get only half the
additional time students need," said Kaufmann. "Clearly management is out of
touch with the needs of students and the demands placed on EAs and IAs, and it
looks like they have no intention of settling this strike."
CUPE 4222, Unit C, represents 852 permanent and 311 casual EAs and IAs,
who provide care to special needs students in 186 schools in the city of
London, and in the counties of Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex.
"Our employer is not really aware of what it takes to help students on a
daily basis," said Helena McConkie, spokesperson for CUPE 4222, Unit C. "If
they understood the needs of students, they would not have offered us a deal
that our members already rejected."
"It's now up to the board to explain to parents why they are not doing
everything possible to end this strike," said McConkie. "The board's
contingency plans include hiring unqualified replacement workers to do our
work, and today they called us back to the table with nothing new to offer -
this demonstrates their total lack of respect for our work and for students."
