Subject: Central pulls out

From the Hartford Courant:

Concerned about the strength of the field, the Central Connecticut men's basketball team has pulled out of November's Hispanic College Fund Classic at the Civic Center.

"We're out," athletic director C.J. Jones said. "There were too many questions about the opponents."

UConn appears set, with Temple and Mississippi mentioned as other possibilities. Jones said he did not like the thought of Central opening 0-3.

"We're competitive and welcome challenges, but [an 0-3 start] is one of those things you don't want to see maybe happen," he said.

----

Don't know if I agree with this, but who knows. How often do we get big time programs in our backyard on a NEUTRAL court? Temple has a new coaching staff and its not the powerhouse program it once was. We take money games from UConn every few years. And how about a shot at one of the big boys (Mississippi) after they lose to UConn? Its a really tough weekend, but I think the exposure would have been worth it.

So now it looks like no UConn and no Penn State. I was getting real excited about the schedule. What does it look like now other than the UMass in Uncasville and the return games (Harvard, St. Bona, Delaware)?

[> at Iona? -- J.J., 14:43:10 06/11/06 Sun

Rumor is we signed a home/home with the defending MAAC champions Iona. The Gales finished last season with a 23-8 record (13-5 MAAC) and lost to LSU as a #13 seed in the first round of the NCAA tourney. Last season they had a big wins at #23 Iowa State, at Fordham, at Fresno State, and home vs. Buffalo in the "Bracket Buster" event. They also lost by 6 at #19 Kentucky.

The 2006-07 game is scheduled for New Rochelle, NY with a return game in New Britain in 2007-08.

Tentative 06-07 OOC schedule
vs Harvard (Ivy)
vs Delaware (CAA)
vs St. Bona (A-10)
vs UMass (A-10) at Mohegan Sun Arena
at Iona (MAAC)

According to the Iona message board, our matchup has been scratched. Iona will face Princeton instead.

I can say that I am a little disappointed with this, this would have been a very good tourney to be in i believe. Everyone would get a good luck as to how we can handle ourselves against the best. We can see what all the newcomers have to offer against the best. The losses might hurt the record a little bit but the only way thats gonna make a big difference is come tourney time if we are getting seeded differently in the NCAA tourney.

Agreed...CCSU should NOY have pulled out. Since we did, I wish CJ would not have admitted to the world that CCSU is not ready for prime time! He could have stated it diferently.

They probably pulled out because Hickenbottom and Middleton bailed. I know they were not the heart of the team but a good part they were. They at least brought a little experience to the floor. Though, I think CCSU would have done okay...look, the probable starting line up seems pretty solid!!!!! And, with uconn's top players gone, and not to mention the way they played last MArch -like puppies - not huskies!!!!I think the Blue Devils would have had a fair shot at them at the Civic Center. Oh well, maybe next year...

I would rather see CCSU take quality wins against teams like Iona, St.Bonnie & Umass, then get thier head handed to them by Uconn and possilby others. There are still a lot of "?" with so many incoming players, I think as we get closer to the start of next season we will get a better feel for each players talents & role on the team.

There is a calculated risk here. First, I generally agree and think we should have played, but it would have been very tough and very possibly an 0-3 start (not that that matters).

We were going to lose to UConn by 15-20 no matter what so, put that to bed. I don't think Temple is going to be great, and I have no idea about Ole Miss, although they are an SEC team. I don't mind the loses if we can learn some things and execute against better teams. Also, it provides us a chance for a "big time" upset.

On the other had wins vs solid teams like Iona and UMass are probably better in the long run, but not as imporessive from a media or fan perspective. Our goal is to win the NEC, so lets do what it takes to get there. However taking this route gives us no chance at an NIT invite if we fail to win the NEC. There will be no "marquee" wins on our resume.

Its not as simple as we make it seem.

[> Big Mistake -- J.J., 12:22:49 07/05/06 Wed

Been out of touch on a vacation, but just heard the news. Fairfield is playing is the Hispanic scholarship tourney :(

What a mistake we made by pulling out! We would of had a game vs. UConn, an SEC team (Mississippi), and a new to DI team CENTRAL Arkansas. No way we would go 0-3 with this lineup.

Why did we get out of this one? We could of had 3 games in the Civic Center and lots of press from the Courant and Hartford TV channels! Instead Fairfield and their new coach gets some badly needed exposure.

Pulling out because of competativeness was not a good public statement for the program. Sorry, but I'm pretty dissapointed in this one.

Agreed - 100%! CJ has done a great job at CCSU and is a great guy but he shouldn't have announced to the world that CCSU is "not ready for prime time". I heard through the grapevine that the real reasons were scheduling and administrative problems. This makes the reason CCSU pulled out in the press even more upsetting. I also get the feeling that Howie does not want to play a Jim Calhoun team.

Oh well, at least parking is easier at Detrick than the Civic Center!

What, are the Russians invading from Mexico?

If I got your hint that's cool. I have a friend at UM Law School right now.

Anything else to look forward to?

Red Dawn? Interesting movie reference. We are 0-1 against Tommy Amaker. He beat us when he was with Seton Hall during the 2000-2001 season. I take it this game will be in Ann Arbor. Any chance of a return match here next year? Of course that would be @ either the Civic Center or the Mohegan Sun.

I'll give you the non-league home games for an appetizer...LaSalle, Bonnies, Harvard, Vermont, Delaware and then the Minutemen at Mohegan Sun on the 9th of Dec.

St. Bonnie, Delaware & Harvard are no surprise. Umass was known but still a BIG game. Nice hit landing Vermont. I am surprised to see La Salle again, they played us in the past two season...we will beat them this time! (as far as I am concerned we did last time too!!!)

[> [> Re: Central pulls out -- J.J., 09:42:38 07/07/06 Fri

Not bad, so far. Possiblly the hardest and most exciting home schedule ever. The six OOC home games include three A-10 teams and 1 each from the CAA, AE, and Ivy. Any chance we are looking to move to the A-10 instead of the AE? :)

I had read something about another game vs. LaSalle, but thought that series was over. Without Steve Smith we should win this. I wish Hicks was staying to play a Philly team and get a return game back home in his Senior season. Now that Dr. G turned this program around its a good game.

Also, great game vs. Vermont. A quality New England program led by a good coach. This is a very good game vs. a top-tier AE team. This is a good test and I really like these type of regional games.

Looking forward to the full announcement next week.

[> [> [> Re: Central pulls out-Hispanic Tourney Teams -- Keith, 20:30:38 07/07/06 Fri

Well folks... it looks like it's Conn, Old Miss, Fairfield and Central Arkansas in that tourney. I don't know who replaced CCSU but I am sure the Devils would have had a good chance to beat the Stags or the Bears. I was wondering...FFLD does not want to play CCSU...ever! Maybe that was a factor in this whole thing.

[> [> [> Re: Central pulls out -- Keith, 20:36:26 07/07/06 Fri

Yeah...CCSU DID win the game against Lasalle. In fact, during an interview, the Lasalle player didn't even know he was fouled. Anyway...that's sports! Regarding any conference changes, in my opinion, a move to the AE would be a lateral move. In fact, the NEC has played well against the AE and may even have had a winning record against them last year. True, the colleges are better known, but athletically, I see little difference between the too. Besides, the NEC has football. Any chance of really stepping up to the CAA or the A-10 would require serious $$ and of course a better facility.
