Big things ahead for Blue Devils

NEW BRITAIN-It will be March before we know for sure if bigger is really better, but Central Connecticut's men's basketball schedule for the 2006-2007 season is without question a full one.
This season's slate, which features 30 regular season contests, totals the most non-league games in coach Howie Dickenman's now 11-year tenure, with 14 overall at home, 13 on the road and three at neutral sites.
Included on the itinerary is a trip to Michigan to open the season for three games at the John Thompson Classic, a trip to the Mohegan Sun Arena for another date with UMass, and eight other non-conference games.
The season begins on Friday, November 10, with the opening game of the Thompson Classic against Michigan. The Wolverines have held their own against Big 10 competition in recent years, making the NIT championship game last season. CCSU then plays Eastern Michigan and Davidson to complete the three-game, three-day tournament. It will be a stern test for the Blue Devils as they look to assimilate a bunch of new talent into the mix, and CCSU will find out how ready its newcomers are right away.
"We're going to play three good teams out there," Dickenman said. "Three games in three nights is a challenge. We're going to have to go 9, 10, 11 deep out there. We'll see where we are."
From there it's off to Boston for a matchup with a depleted but dangerous Northeastern team. The Huskies no longer have Jose Juan Barea and CAA last year's defensive player of the year Shawn James, but will still make the Blue Devils earn one in Cabot Gym.
Three of the next four games are at home, with St. Bonaventure, Saint Francis (NY) and Delaware coming to Detrick Gymnasium in a two-week stretch as November gives way to December. A trip to Lehigh on December 2nd breaks up the homestand briefly.
Then the Blue Devils and Minutemen meet at Mohegan a week later before CCSU has a homestand sure to peak local basketball fans' interest.
Harvard, which was on its way to a big year before injuries set in last year, comes to New Britain December 13th, with La Salle in town three days later. That game is a rematch of the controversial but classic four-overtime game on the same floor last year.
After the holiday break, CCSU hosts Vermont on the 28th of December. Two nights later the Devils take a trip to former NEC foe UMBC before the meat of the conference season starts on January 4th.
"Hopefully the challenge of playing good teams before our league schedule really starts will help us improve before league play really begins, even though we have one game in the league before the new year," Dickenman said.
NEC play begins in earnest with the longest trip of the year, as CCSU goes from Saint Francis (PA) to Robert Morris and the Mount in early January. The trip is earlier in the year than last year's trek was, which proves beneficial on a few levels.
"It comes during the semester break," Dickenman said. "So the positive part is that we won't miss any school. Invariably in the past we've always missed a couple days of school while making that trip. So we don't miss school and we get it out of the way."
LIU, FDU and Monmouth provide the opposition for three straight home games right after the trip that could prove crucial in mid-January.
From there the Devils essentially alternate home and road games against league rivals, but a two-game swing through New Jersey for Monmouth and FDU on Febuary 15th and 17th looms large. Central ends the regular season with two home games, facing Robert Morris and Wagner. The Blue Devils play everyone in the league twice, home and away, with two exceptions: they do not travel to Wagner and Saint Francis (PA) does not come to New Britain.
The season is still months away, but Dickenman sounded eager on Monday.
"We're all energized, the players and coaches," Dickenman said. "Even this time of year, we're excited to be getting ready to get the season going."
The school also announced that it will continue its radio relationship with ESPN Radio 1410. All of CCSU's games will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1410 for the 10th consecutive year.
CCSU's website will have a link to the broadcasts as well, with Bruce Biel handling the play-by-play duties.

Central's schedule was also reported prominently in the Hartford Courant with UConn's men's and womens' schedule.

<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.courant.com/sports/college/husky/men/hc-colhoops0725.artjul25,0,3476029.story?coll=hc-headlines-sports">http://www.courant.com/sports/college/husky/men/hc-colhoops0725.artjul25,0,3476029.story?coll=hc-headlines-sports</a>

Now I know UConn is in the Big East and they will have 6 new guys this year too, but isn't that a pretty weak OOC schedule even for them. I think they go 12-2 in the non-conference portion of their slate, no problem.

Of their 14 OOC games, just 3 are worthy of even mentioning (and they are in Jan and Feb) - @ LSU, vs. Indiana, and @ Georgia Tech.

The Hispanic Classic does include Mississippi, but after that is a lot of home cooking with the likes of Coppin St., Texas Southern, St. Mary's (CA), and our two in-state NEC peers.

Now if I were a Huskies season ticket holder I'd be very disapointed (yes, I know the BE schedule more than makes up for it, but even that isn't round robin anymore) IMO - that really makes CCSU's OOC schedule look that much better.
