Subject: Football / Atlhletic Complex Expansion/Changes

Obviously, there has been more than just talk about expanding the football stadium in the near future. However, I have overheard that the whole athletic complex will be "redone," including a track around the EXISTING Central Soccer Field. This does not make a whole lot of sense in terms of expanding Arute Stadium. Seats could not be on the east side if this were the case. Seating would have to be in the back of the end zones.
I have heard that the original plan was to have the track on the site next to Exit 29 SB?

Any news or thoughts?
What's the timeframe on the construction?

Unlike UKonn, Central goes about construction projects the *RIGHT* way by using state resources and departments that are much better equipped at handeling projects, timelines, costs, *cough* building and fire codes *cough*.. There has to be a project plan somewhere for a project this big.

Larry,

That's not exactly true. Due to UConn's huge budget and political influence they were able to get the Legilature to agree to let the run all the projects without state oversight - a very bad idea. UConn acted as the design team, purchaser, project manager, bank, and auditor. That is way too much responsibility for an EDUCATIONAL organization. No doubt they screwed up UConn 2000 (and many building projects there), but who didn't see that coming? I did :)

CCSU (and all CSU schools) are required to use the State Dept. of Public Works for all our capital projects. These are the same guys that oversee courthouse construction, etc. They are the experts, but often they do not take good direction from their clients - CCSU. See the parging garage fiasco and lawsuit vs the state. Furthermore, the new Arute construction was designed by the university's in house planner - with no experience in athletic facilities - so that why the lockers rooms had some problems and some of the stadium design is questionable at best.

IMO - its is the university's responsibility to create a master plan, set out facility specifications, and provide the overall critera for any new construction. We are the client/customer and we know what we want and need!

The state should fund the projcet, issue RFPs based on our requirements, and oversee the project. The state has the means and expertise to fund and manage a major construction project - something CCSU/CSU system can not do well.

Experienced private professionals should be the ones that actually design and build the final project. We want a builder with a great resume and references from similar projects. You want the best quailty work to meet our needs at the lowest price possible.

Sorry this is my public policy side getting the best of me on a sports board, but you see my point.

[> Master Plan -- J.J., 10:01:07 07/26/06 Wed

The Master plan - this dates back to 1999, but it is still a good framework and includes as 6-8k filedhouse on the site of the current Arute parking lot.

Barbour Road Athletic Facilities - There was plans to build some stuff at this site along the CT-9 expressway exit. Current status is unknown.

http://www.ccsu.edu/admAffairs/construction/ActiveProjects/ProgressPhotos.asp?ProjectId=8&Project_Name=Barbour%20Road%20Athletic%20Facility&FullProjectName=(BI-RC-299)

"Updated" Campus Construction - not a very clear webpage but it mentions many completed and upcoming projects.

JJ is correct on all counts folks. UCONN had no state oversight and spent money like a drunken sailor. Here's the scoop as far as I know regarding the outdoor atheltic facilities at CCSU.

Dr. Miller was to have gone before the CSU Board of Trustees to get approval for the entire project. He felt that it should pass but I don't know what happened.

In order to increas the seating capacity of Arute, seats have to be constructed on the east side, which forces moving the soccer field futher east. The new field will have the same turf as the football field. Room is also needed for a badly needed running track around the soccer field, hence the reason for moving the field. The new east side seats at Arute will have some seating for soccer on the opposite side. In between the two seating configurations will be a locker room for soccer. I am sure that the lighting must be moved as well.

The baseball and softball fields must be realigned to accomodate the seating around Balf Savin. In someone's infinate wisdom, that picnic pavilion prevents the seats from wrapping around home plate in the field's current configuration. Home plate will probably be where first base is now.

When I received this info back in May, I was told this will all be done in 18 months. BUT...since we are not UCONN...don't hold your breath.

I will say though, Dr. Miller is committed to first class facilities, both academic (we can't forget that CCSU is a university) and athletic.

If I hear anything else, I will surely post it.

Thats all I know
