NEW BRITAIN-While many people have begun focusing on the upcoming college football season and others have started breaking down Central Connecticut's basketball schedule, there are two other groups of Blue Devils that should be in the mix for Northeast Conference titles.

The first is CCSU's women's soccer team, which should be considered the team to beat in the hunt for another NEC championship simply because it always is.

The four-time defending champions have been installed again as the preseason favorite by the NEC's coaches, who put the Blue Devils on top of their preseason poll.
CCSU was first on seven of the 10 ballots, with Long Island getting three votes on the way to finishing second. The Blackbirds lost to CCSU in the NEC final last season when Jessica McCavanagh finished a breakaway to give the Blue Devils the game's only goal.

The Blue Devils are a staggering 32-4-1 in NEC play during the four years they have held the league's top spot, while LIU is a recent returnee to the title picture, having its best season since 1999 a year ago when it won the championship. The Blackbirds won a school-record 13 games in 2005.

The men's soccer program made some noise last year by reaching the NEC tournament for the second straight time, and the Blue Devils hope for a repeat performance in 2006.
Shaun Green's squad was picked to finish third in the preseason poll, behind Monmouth, who went unbeaten in the NEC last year, and FDU.

Central was 8-6-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the league last year, and returns the two-time NEC player of the year in Alex Harrison who will be asked to add senior leader to his list of responsibilities this season. He was sixth in the country in goals per game last year and 12th in points per game, but Monmouth returns NEC defensive player of the year Hugh MacDonald.

FDU was in the top 10 in the country last year before fading late in the season. Robert Morris, which picked the right time of year to get hot and captured last year's NEC tournament, finished fourth in this year's preseason poll.
