Bruce, what end of the earth do you live on? Its that kind of talk that really screws things up for the Salmon River. Snagging is not a means of fishing and should never be considered "ok" even if a few guys do it. I hate to tell you this but alot of people snag their fish up there and it's not pretty. Bruce you hit the nail right on the head, see you don't care about the fishery its all about the mighty dollar. Everyone wins because everyone gets a few greenbacks out of the deal. Well, I'm here to tell you that the fishery is in total disorder, the big payoff never came and now once a year the circus comes to town, the clowns run up and down the river, and all decent folk stay clear of the area for a month. What you get in the fall is an ugly mob of low lifes that don't care about people's property, the laws, or the other people around them. Where else can a person go away for the weekend, spend maybe a hundred bucks, act like a five-year-old and get away with it. It is crazy up here!!!
Fines are one solution, BUT when they start handing too many out the store owners cry that the DEC is too hard on their customers and that its driving them away. Again, the mighty dollar takes control and the DEC backs off. I for one do not want these kind of folks on the river, so if you can't get your $1000.00 fines then what?
If your waiting for videos to state your case, then you will have miles of it. Several of us will be catching all the action this fall and I'm sure it will make alot of people sick when they see it.
Oh, and I heard today that they are going to open up Orwell Brook again to fishing or should I say snagging. Can't wait to tape that whole mess when it starts up again. Hopefully, the state won't be dumb enough to start stocking it again so that the poachers can benifit from their fruits of labor.
Come to a meeting maybe, but I have my own agenda. Not to criticize, but I've seen many a groups meet with the DEC and quite frankly nothing gets done or they appease you with little trinkets and then they continue with their own plan. Maybe the commissioner for the DEC should be an elected office instead of the governor appointing somebody whom knows nothing about fishing and hunting.
