hey Bob C....I know you guys had less then stellar salmon fishing this fall....but you need to make sure you are aware of a few things. With the pen rearing programs all mature now...you won't be getting ALL the kings in the lake back to the salmon river. So while home base is the salmon river..the western basin had much better fall fishing then in the past 8 years cause our pen reared fish didn't swim to the salmon river. Another interesting fact...in the creel census survey's that the DEC took last fall on the Niagara river....they sampled a huge amount of salmon river clipped mature fish. They think because the salmon river was low and warm well into late Sept. the fish opted for cooler better water at the west end. I know the guys fishing kings in Sept. in the Niagara had a banner year. Out of Oak orchard we had the best Sept. fishing we've had in 10 years....so things are changing...more so that the fish are now being distributed and staying put all over the lake and not in just one place. However...there are record numbers of wild kings coming out of the salmon river each June. If they truly imprint on the salmon river...you may see a boom crop of wild fish that will return. Dan Bishop ...the Altmar Biologist for king salmon is in the second year of a survival study program to see just how well those young of the year fish survive once they hit the big water.

So I understand your pain...but the fishing did not go down hill everywhere. In the western basin we fish off shore from late May till Oct. and clobber fish off shore...it's a whole fishery that is largly untapped in the eastern end of the lake. You may want to explore those situations...if you don't already...cause there are plenty of fish in the canyons if you know how to find them. Good luck ...hang in there
